Generally speaking, no you can’t.

Personal grooming products (like makeup, skincare and hair care) are generally private expenses. This is even if your employer expects you to maintain a certain appearance (unfortunately).

There are only a few very specific exceptions where grooming can be claimed:

Performing Arts: Actors, models, or entertainers can sometimes claim the cost of specialised theatrical makeup or wigs used specifically for a role.

Industry Specifics: Workers in the adult industry, or specialised jobs like flight attendants and cosmetic artists, may have unique allowances or circumstances, but everyday grooming is still strictly personal.

Covering an employee’s visa costs counts as a fringe benefit, subject to FBT at the top rate of 47%.

In many cases it’s cheaper to give your staff a taxable allowance and let them pay the fees at their own marginal rate.

Tax time comes with plenty of grey areas, but the ATO has made a few things particularly black and white this year.

Check what’s been pre-filled, declare the income that hasn’t, and make sure your deductions actually reflect this year rather than last year’s return.

And one worth repeating: that new $1,000 standard work-related deduction isn’t available yet. That’s a Tax Time 2027 change.
