💰 TAX & FINANCE UPDATE | SEPTEMBER 2026 🇦🇺

With the cost of living, interest rates and tax obligations continuing to put pressure on Sydney households and businesses, here are a few important updates worth knowing this month.

📈 INTEREST RATES — ALL EYES ON THE RBA

The RBA cash rate currently sits at 4.35%, with the next interest-rate decision scheduled for 29 September 2026.

Inflation remains above the RBA’s target range, so borrowers should continue to factor higher financing costs into household and business cash-flow planning.

🏢 SMALL BUSINESS — $20,000 INSTANT ASSET WRITE-OFF

Thinking about purchasing equipment or other assets for your business?

The ATO has recently highlighted the $20,000 instant asset write-off and the eligibility rules that determine whether a small business can claim an immediate deduction.

Before making a purchase purely for a tax deduction, speak with your accountant to make sure the asset and timing meet the relevant requirements.

💼 PAYDAY SUPER IS HERE

From 1 July 2026, employers are required to pay employees’ Super Guarantee contributions on payday, rather than under the previous quarterly payment system.

Super Guarantee is calculated at 12% of qualifying earnings, and employers need to ensure their payroll and cash-flow processes are keeping up with the new requirements.

📊 GST & PAYG INSTALMENTS

For the 2026–27 income year, the GDP adjustment factor used in calculating certain quarterly GST and PAYG instalments has increased to 5%.

For business owners, this makes proactive cash-flow and tax planning even more important.

🏠 SYDNEY HOUSEHOLDS & BUSINESS OWNERS

With interest rates remaining elevated and tax and super rules continuing to change, now is a good time to review:

✅ Tax planning and deductions
✅ Business cash flow
✅ PAYG and BAS obligations
✅ Superannuation compliance
✅ Business structures and asset purchases

🚨 Tax & Super Update – What Australian Businesses Need to Know 📢

There have been some important tax and superannuation developments that every employer should have on their radar.

💼 1. Payday Super is now in effect
Employers are now required to pay employees’ superannuation at the same time as wages, replacing the old quarterly payment system. This is one of the biggest changes to super in decades and means payroll processes need to be accurate and up to date. (Australian Taxation Office)

📈 2. Higher Super Contribution Caps
For the 2026–27 financial year:
✅ Concessional (before-tax) contribution cap has increased to $32,500
✅ Non-concessional (after-tax) contribution cap has increased to $130,000

These higher limits may create additional tax-effective opportunities for those looking to grow their retirement savings. (Rest Super)

💰 3. Personal Income Tax Relief
The tax rate applying to income between $18,201 and $45,000 has reduced from 16% to 15% from 1 July 2026, putting more money back into the pockets of many Australians. (Rest Super)

💼 ATO Tax Time Update – Have You Checked Your Return?

Tax time is well underway, and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has confirmed that most income statements and pre-fill information are now available, making it the ideal time to prepare your 2025–26 tax return.

Before lodging, remember to:
✅ Ensure all your income has been reported, including side hustles and investment income.
✅ Only claim deductions you’re genuinely entitled to and keep supporting records.
✅ Check that your pre-filled information is complete before submitting your return.
✅ If you’re unsure, seek advice from a registered tax professional rather than relying on social media or AI-generated tax tips.
