Payday Super started 1 July 2026, changing how fast employee super has to be paid.

📌 Super now needs to reach your employees' funds much faster than the old quarterly cycle
📌 The ATO is taking a staged compliance approach in its first year
📌 Worth checking your payroll process matches the new timing

We've broken down what Gold Coast businesses need to check to stay compliant. Full details on the blog 👇

Three car tax numbers changed from 1 July 2026 — worth knowing before you sign for a work vehicle:

🚗 Car depreciation limit: $69,883
💰 Luxury car tax thresholds: $91,661 (fuel-efficient) / $80,809 (other), taxed at 33% above the line
📊 Cents-per-km rate: 91c, up from 88c

The most common mistake we're seeing: using last year's limit for a vehicle ordered before 1 July but delivered after. Full breakdown on the blog 👇

Payday Super: it's been running for almost 3 months, and the first quarter under the new rules closes this week.

The short version:
🔹 Super now has to reach your employees' funds within 7 business days of each payday, not 28
🔹 The ATO sorts employers into low, medium and high risk for its first-year compliance approach
🔹 Still paying quarterly? Clear any shortfall within 28 days of quarter-end to stay lower priority
🔹 That 28-day window for the September quarter lines up with late October, right around BAS time

If your payroll habits haven't quite caught up to the new timing yet, now's the moment to check.

How much do you actually need to retire comfortably? It's one of the most common questions we get, and the honest answer is that it depends on far more than a single super balance.

For the March 2026 quarter, ASFA puts a comfortable retirement at $78,566 a year for a couple and $55,923 for a single person (home owners, aged 65-84). A modest lifestyle comes in at $52,473 for a couple and $36,434 for a single person. Working backwards, that means a lump sum of around $730,000 for a couple or $630,000 for a single person to fund a comfortable retirement from age 67, drawing a part Age Pension along the way.

We've covered how your own super balance compares to the averages by age, and what else besides super changes the real picture, in our latest blog post: https://witham.net/comfortable-retirement-cost-2026/

If you'd like to know where you actually sit against these benchmarks, get in touch and we'll run the numbers with you.

Topping up your super with a bit of your pre-tax pay sounds simple, and it usually is, but the numbers behind salary sacrifice are worth understanding properly before you set it up.

For 2026-27, the concessional contributions cap is $32,500, up from $30,000. That covers your salary sacrifice plus your employer's compulsory Super Guarantee contributions combined, so it's worth checking how much room you've actually got left before setting an amount.

We've covered how salary sacrifice works, the cap, Division 293 for higher income earners, and how to use unused cap from previous years, in our latest blog post: https://witham.net/salary-sacrifice-super-cap-2026-27/

If you'd like a hand working out what makes sense for your income and super balance, get in touch and we'll run the numbers with you.

Moving out of your home doesn't automatically mean you have to sell it, or start paying capital gains tax the moment you rent it out.

The main residence exemption has a built-in six-year absence rule that can keep your old home capital gains tax free for years after you've moved on, provided a few conditions are met. And if you don't rent it out at all, there's no time limit whatsoever.

We've covered how the six-year rule works, what happens if you go over it, and how it lines up with the new negative gearing and CGT changes coming in from 1 July 2027, in our latest blog post: https://witham.net/main-residence-exemption-renting-out-home/

If you're weighing up renting out a home you're moving out of, get in touch and we'll run the numbers with you.

Card surcharges are being banned from 1 October. EFTPOS, Mastercard and Visa are all dropping the ability to surcharge across debit, prepaid and credit cards, and Amex is doing the same voluntarily.

The RBA is cutting interchange fee caps on the same day, which softens the impact — but if your business currently surcharges (in-store, online, on invoices or through a booking system), some of that cost will still land back on you. The RBA estimates 16% of Australian businesses currently surcharge, charging around $1.8 billion between them in 2024/25.

We've put together a checklist covering where surcharges typically apply, how to work out the real cost once the fee changes are factored in, and what needs updating before the date lands. Read it here: https://witham.net/card-surcharge-ban-2026/

Big news for property investors and anyone holding assets outside super: the negative gearing and CGT reforms are now law.

The short version:
- Owned a residential investment property before 7:30pm AEST on 12 May 2026? You're grandfathered - nothing changes.
- Buying after that date? Rental losses will be quarantined from 1 July 2027, unless a new-build exemption applies.
- From 1 July 2027, the 50% CGT discount is replaced with cost base indexation plus a 30% minimum tax rate for most assets, and every asset gets a deemed reset to market value on that date.

Changes don't start for a while yet, but the cut-off date has already passed - worth knowing where you stand now. Full plain-English breakdown on our blog: https://witham.net/negative-gearing-cgt-changes-2027/

⚠️ URGENT WARNING FROM YOUR ACCOUNTANT ⚠️

Australians are losing millions to crypto investment scams, and a recent Federal Court case shows how easily it can happen.

In December 2025, the Federal Court wound up NGS Group, NGS Crypto and NGS Digital after finding they operated illegally for six years. More than 450 Australians invested approximately $59 million into blockchain mining schemes that promised fixed returns. The companies held no AFSL licence, and investors were encouraged to use SMSFs to invest retirement savings. Liquidators have now been appointed, and it remains uncertain how much investors will recover.

🚨 RED FLAGS TO WATCH FOR:

❌ Guaranteed returns or fixed profits

❌ Crypto mining packages promising passive income

❌ Pressure to invest your superannuation

❌ Online friends or romantic interests promoting investments

❌ Referral bonuses for recruiting others

❌ No ASIC licence or registration

❌ Problems withdrawing your money

❌ Requests to pay fees to unlock funds

If you’ve been approached by a crypto investment promoter, stop and do your research first.

✅ Keep all records and screenshots

✅ Check ASIC and Moneysmart warnings

✅ Report suspicious activity to Scamwatch and ASIC

The golden rule: if the returns sound too good to be true, they probably are!

26/05/2026

As we approach tax time and end of the financial year, we would like to update clients on several important changes affecting accounting firms and taxpayers across Australia.

The accounting profession is currently experiencing some of the most significant regulatory and compliance changes seen in many years, including the introduction of new Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) obligations from 1 July 2026.

At the same time, the recent Federal Budget introduced substantial proposed changes affecting companies, trusts, investors, SMSFs and business owners, resulting in an increasingly complex taxation environment for many Australians.

Many of these proposed measures are still subject to further detail, draft legislation and clarification from Government departments and the ATO. Our office is monitoring developments closely and we are already reviewing how these changes may affect our clients over the coming years.

We understand many clients may be uncertain about what these reforms could mean for them personally or for their business structures. Please be assured that we are following these developments carefully so we can provide practical guidance and assistance when the final rules and implementation details become clearer.

As a firm, we are continuing to invest heavily in:

upgraded compliance and security systems;
enhanced client identity verification procedures;
electronic signing and paperless workflow technology;
staff training and professional development;
improved advisory and tax planning services; and
systems designed to improve efficiency and client communication.
These investments are designed to ensure we continue delivering high-quality professional advice, while also meeting the increasing compliance obligations now being imposed on accounting firms Australia-wide.

Our goal is to implement these requirements as efficiently and professionally as possible while minimising inconvenience to clients.

Additional Value and Advisory Support

While compliance requirements are increasing, we also believe clients deserve greater value and proactive advice in return.

Over the coming years, many clients may require assistance with:

business structure reviews;
trust and SMSF planning;
CGT and investment planning;
PAYG and cash flow strategies;
business succession and restructuring advice; and
navigating ongoing tax law changes arising from recent Federal Budgets.
Our focus is not simply on tax return preparation, but on helping clients better understand and manage their broader financial and taxation position in an increasingly complex environment.

We thank all clients for your continued support and look forward to assisting you throughout the 2026–27 financial year.

If you have any questions, please contact our office.
