📢 Card surcharges are ending on 1 October 2026: here's what you need to know
From 1 October 2026, following the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) reforms, businesses will no longer be able to add a surcharge when customers pay by eftpos, Mastercard or Visa cards, including credit, debit and prepaid cards.
🛍️ For shoppers:
The price you see is the price you pay. No more surprise fees at the checkout when you tap or pay by card. If you're charged a surcharge on these cards after 1 October, you can raise it with the business.
🏪 For businesses that currently surcharge:
Now is the time to get ready. Before 1 October, you'll need to:
✅ Switch off surcharging on your payment terminals and online checkout
✅ Update signage, menus, invoices and website notices that mention surcharges
✅ Review your pricing to account for payment costs
✅ Brief your staff so they can answer customer questions
The RBA is also lowering the fees banks charge on card transactions, which should help reduce the cost of accepting card payments for many businesses.
