From 1 October 2026, businesses can no longer apply surcharges to card payments, including eftpos, Mastercard, Visa and American Express transactions.

Small businesses are encouraged to take the following actions to ensure they’re prepared for the change:
💳 review payment systems to identify where card surcharges may be currently applied
💳 review pricing and business costs to understand the impacts
💳 train staff so they understand what’s happening
💳 look out for communications from merchant service providers

If it’s your only job, or main source of income, yes, you should claim the tax-free threshold on your TFN declaration form.

This means, the first $18,200 you earn each year is tax free.

But it’s important to know, your employer might still take tax out of your pay if it looks like you’ll earn more than $18,200 (just to be safe).

If you don’t end up earning more than $18,200, you’ll get the tax back when you lodge your return.

If you have multiple jobs, only claim the tax-free threshold from ONE of them (usually the highest paying).

The tax-free threshold applies to your TOTAL income, not to each job separately. So, if job 1, job 2 and job 3 all think they’re your only employer, they might not withhold enough tax.

While casual employment is different from permanent employment, workplace rights still apply, including:

- minimum pay and casual loading (or a specific casual rate)
- protection from bullying, harassment and discrimination
- certain types of paid and unpaid leave
- a pathway to permanent employment.

Paying for a TFN? That’s fake news 🙅

There are no fees when applying for a TFN, and no need to use third party services.

If someone asks you to pay, it’s a red flag 🚩
