Jolene sat down with KD from or the first episode of Let's Talk, Independent Money Woman, talking simple budgeting.

It's a straightforward conversation about getting your money sorted without the stress or the confusing jargon, and without giving up the things you actually enjoy.

If budgeting has always felt like a chore or something that only works for other people, this one's worth a listen. Real, practical advice you can use.

Today is National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day.

Led by SNAICC, this year's theme is Living Our Truth, honouring the stories and knowledge passed down through generations, and the strength of children carrying that forward.

Every child's journey is shaped by culture, community and connection to Country. That foundation is what lets kids grow up knowing exactly who they are, with their voices and dreams leading the way.

We're proud to acknowledge the children in our own community today, and the Elders and families who hold that knowledge for them.

Day and how you can participate is at snaicc.org.au. ❤️🖤💛

A few dates worth having marked down for August. This month brings the tail end of a few EOFY obligations alongside the usual monthly rhythm.

→ 14 August – Lodge PAYG withholding payment summary annual report, if you're a large withholder or don't have a tax or BAS agent handling this for you.

→ 21 August – Lodge and pay your July 2026 monthly BAS.
→ 25 August – Lodge and pay your June quarter (Q4) BAS if you're lodging electronically.

→ 28 August – Lodge your Taxable Payments Annual Report (TPAR) if you've paid contractors this financial year. This is also the deadline for the Q4 super guarantee charge statement, if super wasn't paid on time and in full last quarter.

📌 If any of these apply to you and you're unsure where you stand, get in touch. We're here to help you stay ahead of it. https://bit.ly/3xhCkRy

Profit on the P&L and money in the bank aren't the same thing. I've had clients who looked strong by every measure and still got caught out. Their business was doing well but nobody had a clear picture of when the money was actually moving in and out.

That's what the annual budget and cashflow forecast is built to fix. I work from your real Xero data, put together a full twelve month view, then sit down with you to go through it properly until it reflects how your business runs.

Once that's done, it lives inside Xero as a working forecast you check against every month.

It's made the biggest difference for businesses stepping into a growth phase, for not for profits trying to plan with some real sustainability behind it, and for established businesses going through a stretch where the old numbers stopped being useful.

If you want to see what this would look like for your own business, book a session and we'll go through it. https://bit.ly/3xhCkRy

Every deduction question I get from clients eventually comes back to the same three rules.

The first is purpose. The expense has to be connected to earning your business income.

This is where most people get caught, usually without realising it. Phone bills, home internet, a car that does both the school run and client visits, these all need to be split based on actual use.

The third is proof. Depending on the expense, you'll need a receipt, an invoice, a logbook, or a diary.

One more thing worth knowing this year. The interest ATO charges you - the general interest charge and the shortfall interest charge, stopped being deductible from 1 July 2025.

If you're ever unsure, get in touch. We're here to help. https://bit.ly/3xhCkRy

This is Elijah and Fluffy, then and now.

Fluffy picked him as her person early on, and she never changed her mind. She waits by the door for him after school. She sits wherever he's sitting. Somewhere along the way they turned into the kind of pair you don't set out to create, they just end up that way.

Lucy-Lou remains unbothered by all of this. She has an office to run and doesn't have time for whatever Elijah and Fluffy have going on. Different cat, different priorities.

I get the same message from a handful of clients every year around now. They want their return the moment lodgement opens, sometimes within the first few days of July. I understand that you want to get it done, get it off your plate. But the timing works against you more often than it works for you.

Your employer has until 14 July to finalise your income through STP. Banks, health funds and share registries often take even longer to send their data through to the ATO's pre-fill system. Miss something, and you're looking at an amended return later, which takes longer than if you'd just waited three weeks in the first place.

It's part of why I've moved to a more structured approach to client work this year too. Each client now has an allocated month for their annual accounts and tax, with documents requested around the 15th of the month prior. The whole point of that system is giving things the time they actually need rather than rushing them.

Most pre-fill data is received by the ATO by late July.

If you're not sure whether your information's ready, go to your mygov and check the pre-fill information before you lodge -https://my.gov.au/

This is last year's crowd at Musgrave Park. This event has grown into the largest NAIDOC celebration in the country, and that scale comes from the people who keep turning up for it every July.

Musgrave Park Family Fun Day is happening this Friday, 10 July, 9am to 5pm, 91 Cordelia Street, South Brisbane. Live entertainment through the day, a community corroboree, arts and crafts from First Nations artists, food stalls, free rides and heaps of activities for the kids, and keynote speakers. Free entry.

Bring the team, bring the family. Some of the best conversations I've had in this work started at a day exactly like this one.

A few key dates for July 2026 :

1 July - Payday Super now in effect. Employer super is paid alongside each pay run rather than on the old quarterly cycle.

14 July - Complete your end of year finalisation declaration for employees through Single Touch Payroll, and issue PAYG withholding payment summaries for any payments not reported through STP.

21 July - Lodge and pay your June 2026 monthly BAS or IAS.

21 July - Annual payroll tax is also typically due around this date, though the threshold and exact requirements depend on your State, so check your own State's specific requirements.

28 July - June quarter super contributions need to be received by the super fund by this date. This is the last quarterly super payment under the old system.

With everything else you're managing, these dates are easy to lose track of, and it's worth setting calendar reminders now.

If any of these need attention or you're not sure where you stand, get in touch. We're here to help you stay ahead of it - https://karlaya.com.au/
