Were you one of the 413,000 or the 683,000? They are the tv ratings of building the nation (Federal Budget) or building Lego structures (Lego Masters.) For those of you who thought the voyeurism of either Big Brother or adults building Lego was more entertaining, we’ve compiled a Budget analysis, that’s one of the things we do.

For me, the two big things were to do with property. The reduction in age for downsizer contributions to super, and the increase from $30,000 to $50,000 from superannuation for first home buyers. The cynical side of me thinks that this is just like the first home owner grant where the price of real estate shot up by the same amount as the grant. And this is an asset class that can’t pop. There is too much invested in the real estate market from all parties for the music to stop playing. Think about all the stamp duty the state government receives. When you consider that they charge a percentage of the purchase price, as do agents on the sale price, So if there’s a 3% fee and the value keeps increasing, that is more and more every time you buy or sell. I wouldn’t be brave enough to label stamp duty a commission, because according to the Royal Commission, commissions are bad.
