New financial year, new tax rates.
From 1 July 2026, the Australian tax brackets have changed - and this time, it means more money in your pocket. The 16% bracket now applies up to $18,200-$45,000, the 30% rate covers $45,001-$135,000, and the 37% rate kicks in from $135,001-$190,000.
What does this actually mean for you? If you earn $90,000, you could pay around $1,350 less in tax this year compared to last year.
We have broken down every bracket, rate, and threshold in our latest guide - including the Medicare levy changes and HELP repayment updates you need to know about.

The 2026-27 Federal Budget is the biggest shake-up to Australian tax in over 20 years. Whether you're a property investor, a small business owner, or you hold investments through a family trust — these changes will affect you.
Key measures:
🔹 The 50% CGT discount is being replaced with cost base indexation from 1 July 2027, with a 30% minimum tax on capital gains
🔹 Negative gearing for established residential property will be restricted to new builds only — but existing investments are grandfathered
🔹 Discretionary trusts will face a 30% minimum tax from 1 July 2028
🔹 A new $250 Working Australians Tax Offset arrives in 2027-28
🔹 The $20,000 instant asset write-off is now permanent for small businesses
🔹 The FBT exemption for electric vehicles is transitioning to a 25% discount
We've published a comprehensive guide covering every major measure, the key dates, and what you should be doing now to prepare.

Do I need to lodge a tax return if I only worked part of the year in Australia?
This is one of the most common questions we hear from new migrants and temporary residents.
Generally, if you earned income in Australia during the financial year, you’re still required to lodge a tax return — even if:
• you arrived part way through the year
• you worked casually or short term
• you changed visas
• you left Australia before 30 June
A common mistake is assuming low income or leaving Australia means nothing needs to be done. In many cases, the ATO still expects a lodgement or a formal non-lodgement advice.
Not addressing this properly can lead to ATO reminders, penalties, or issues later — including when applying for future visas.
If you’re unsure, get clarity before lodging (or not lodging).
