The risks of borrowing from the bank of mum and dad 08/09/2026

Helping children buy a home is becoming increasingly common, but family loans can come with risks if expectations aren't clearly defined. This article highlights why clear communication, documentation, and advice are so important.

๐Ÿก The "Bank of Mum and Dad" has become one of Australia's largest sources of financial support for children trying to enter the property market.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Before lending money to family, make sure everyone is clear on whether it's a gift or a loan. Open conversations can prevent misunderstandings later.

โš ๏ธ Unclear arrangements can lead to family tension, financial stress, and complications if relationships or circumstances change.

๐Ÿ“ Proper documentation and professional advice can help protect both your finances and your family relationships for the long term.

Before lending or guaranteeing money, seek professional advice to understand your options and obligations and how it can impact your own financial situation.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Inflation Is Still Hurting Household Budgets. Is Your Financial Plan Ready?

Many Australians are still feeling the impact of rising living costs.

Recent data shows inflation remained at 3.8% for the year to June 2026, while essential expenses such as housing, electricity, food and healthcare continue to place pressure on household budgets. The RBA has also indicated that further interest rate increases may be possible if inflation remains stubbornly high.

While we can't control inflation, we can control how we prepare for it.

Now may be a good time to review:
โœ… Your household cashflow and spending
โœ… Your mortgage and debt repayment strategy
โœ… Your retirement income projections
โœ… Your superannuation investments
โœ… Your emergency savings reserves
โœ… Your overall financial plan

Periods of economic uncertainty often create opportunities for those who have a clear strategy in place.

If you're wondering how rising costs and interest rates could affect your retirement plans, investments or financial security, let's have a conversation about your options.

โ˜Ž๏ธContact me to arrange a discussion and review whether your financial strategy remains on track.

Behind every statistic is a real person, a grieving family and a community forever changed.

Today I attended the Sound Minds Better Men Charity Lunch at Brisbane City Hall and left feeling both inspired and reflective.

The purpose of the day was simple but incredibly important: raising awareness and funds for organisations supporting Australian men experiencing mental health challenges.

One of the most powerful moments came from a high school student who spoke about losing his dad to su***de. I can only imagine how difficult it would have been to share such a personal story, but the courage shown was remarkable. There wasn't a dry eye in the room.

Mental health is an issue that has touched my own family, as it has so many others across Australia. Having experienced the loss of both immediate and extended family members, I know that behind every statistic is a real person, a grieving family and a community forever changed. Today's event reinforced just how important it is to keep talking about mental health and supporting those who are struggling.

Sadly, the statistics show why this conversation matters:

๐Ÿ’™ More than 3,300 Australians died by su***de in 2024.
๐Ÿ’™ More than three out of every four su***de deaths were men.
๐Ÿ’™ Men are around three times more likely to die by su***de than women.

The positive news is that today's event wasn't just about awareness.

Together, supporters raised more than $324,000 to help fund organisations providing support, connection and hope to Australian men and their families.

Thank you to Sound Minds Better Men, all the speakers who shared their experiences so openly, and to everyone who contributed to such an important cause.

Please check in on your mates. Make the phone call. Start the conversation. Listen without judgement.

You never know how much that simple act could mean to someone.

Had a great day today volunteering at The Lakes College Secondary Athletics Carnival here in North Lakes.

๐ŸŒญSpent most of it behind the BBQ cooking sausages โ€” not a bad way to be part of the action! It was a good excuse to get out of the office and connect with the local community.

๐Ÿฅ‡๐ŸฅˆBest part of the day was watching my youngest out on the track โ€” she came 1st in the 100m and 2nd in the 200m. Super proud moment.

Days like today really make you appreciate the simple things โ€” community, family, and being present.

Had a great day today at the Redcliffe Retirement Living & Senior Lifestyle Expo.

Really enjoyed chatting with so many people about all things retirementโ€”superannuation, planning ahead, aged care, and everything in between. Itโ€™s always a reminder that no two situations are the same, and sometimes a simple conversation can make a big difference in helping people feel more confident about their next steps.

Thanks to everyone who came over for a yarn and shared their stories.

If youโ€™ve got questions or want to chat further, feel free to get in touch.

This is coming up more often lately. Iโ€™ve met with a number of clients just over the last few weeks that provide ongoing care for a loved one but havenโ€™t applied for the Carer Allowance. Certainly worth considering if youโ€™re providing regular care.
