Cash Flow Clarity: A Practitioner's Guide to Advising Small Business Clients

After 20+ years working with business owners, one of the most common conversations I have goes something like this:

"The business is doing well — revenue is up, we're winning work — but I don't understand why we never seem to have enough cash."

It's one of the most misunderstood gaps in small business finance. A business can be genuinely profitable and still struggle with cash — and most owners have never had anyone explain why, or what to do about it.

This course is designed for accounting and finance professionals who want to bridge that gap for their clients.

It covers:

→ Why profit and cash are not the same thing — and how to explain it clearly
→ The four timing gaps that cause the two to diverge
→ How to spot the early warning signs of a cash crunch before it becomes urgent
→ A practical framework for having better advisory conversations with small business clients

It's 2.0 CPE hours, fully accredited and built entirely from real practice experience — not theory.

If you work with small business clients, I'd love for you to check it out.

Exciting news! I'm thrilled to share my first published article in Accounting Today — one of the leading publications for accounting and tax professionals in the United States.

The topic is close to my heart after 20 years in the accounting industry — the gap between what compliance delivers and what small business clients actually need.

Here's the heart of it: a filed tax return doesn't stop a business from running out of cash. The conversations that genuinely move the needle for small business owners are advisory conversations — and we've spent too long treating them as optional rather than essential.

Compliance is necessary, but it has never been the thing that actually changes a client's trajectory.

A new financial year is the best time to build better financial habits. Here are five worth starting now rather than waiting until next June.

1. Reconcile your accounts monthly, not quarterly.
The businesses that move through EOFY with the least stress are the ones whose books are clean all year round. Monthly reconciliation means problems get caught early — not discovered at tax time.

2. Review your P&L every month.
Not just at year end. A monthly P&L review takes 30 minutes and tells you whether the business is actually performing the way you think it is. Revenue feels good. Margin tells the truth.

3. Build a rolling cash flow forecast.
A 13-week cash flow forecast updated weekly gives you visibility over what’s coming before it arrives. Most cash flow problems aren’t surprises, they’re just unseen.

4. Set a budget and actually use it.
A budget that sits in a drawer isn’t a budget — it’s a document. Compare actuals to budget every month and you’ll start making better decisions faster.

5. Know your numbers before your accountant does.
The most financially successful business owners I work with don’t wait for their accountant to tell them how the year went. They already know. Build that habit now and FY2027 will look very different to FY2026.

The start of a new financial year is a great opportunity to create better financial habits and plan for the new financial year!

Big super changes land in 4 weeks. Here's what every Australian employer needs to know.

From 1 July 2026, the way you pay superannuation changes permanently.

Out: quarterly super payments.
In: super paid on the same day as wages. Every pay cycle. No exceptions.

Here's a quick summary of what's changing:

→ Super must be paid on payday and received by the employee's fund within 7 business days
→ The rate stays at 12%, but the calculation base changes — from Ordinary Time Earnings (OTE) to the new broader Qualifying Earnings (QE)
→ The maximum contributions base moves from a quarterly cap ($62,500/quarter) to an annual cap ($250,000/year)
→ Penalties for non-compliance can be up to 200% of the unpaid amount
→ The ATO's Small Business Clearing House (SBSCH) closes completely on 30 June 2026 — if you use it, you need to transition now

What this means in practice:

If you currently pay wages weekly or fortnightly, you'll need to make super contributions at the same frequency. That's a significant cash flow shift for many businesses — especially those used to holding super payments for 3 months.

Three things to do before 1 July:

1. Review your payroll system — does it support payday super and the new SuperStream 3.0 standard?
2. Model the cash flow impact — paying super every payday instead of quarterly will require more working capital
3. If you use SBSCH, transition to a SuperStream-compliant alternative immediately

This isn't proposed legislation. It's already law.

If you're not sure whether your business is ready, feel free to DM me — happy to point you in the right direction.
