📈 Does your business actually have a growth plan — or are you just hoping it grows?
There are really only 4 ways to grow a business, and they fall into two categories: organic growth (referrals and repeat business) and acquired growth (marketing and acquisitions).
Most business owners are comfortable with the first two. It's the acquired growth side that requires a shift in thinking — and a clear plan.
If you're building without a documented growth strategy, you're not alone... but it's one of the biggest missed opportunities we see as accountants.

Ever feel like you're running your business backwards? 🔄
Most owners work hard, pay the bills, cover wages... and just hope there's something left over at year-end.
But what if you flipped the order? What if your business was designed to pay you a specific number, every year — not whatever happens to be left in the account?
That's the idea behind "ideal income": start with what you actually want to earn, then work backwards to figure out the salary, the EBITDA, and the revenue target that gets you there. Suddenly "grow the business" isn't a vague hope — it's a number with a plan behind it.

Could you confidently say what each of your team members is genuinely good at? Not their job title — their real strengths, weaknesses, capacity, and what actually motivates them?
For most business owners, the honest answer is "not fully."
That's the exact gap a simple tool called a people profile can close — think of it as a player card for everyone on your team. Done properly, it's one of the most valuable exercises you can run in your business.
In our latest article, we cover:
✅ What a people profile actually captures
✅ Why it matters more than it looks
✅ How to go deeper than the job description
✅ Where to start (hint: with yourself first)

✈️ Before you book the flights, you choose the destination.
Imagine planning the holiday of a lifetime without deciding where you want to go. You book random flights, accommodation and activities—but none of it fits together.
You might spend a lot of money and stay incredibly busy, yet never have the holiday you truly wanted.
Many business owners approach their businesses—and their lives—in exactly the same way.
They focus on clients, deadlines, employees, bills, revenue and systems without stopping to ask:
**What do I want my business to make possible in my life?**
Do you want to work fewer days? Spend more time with your family? Travel regularly? Improve your health? Live near the ocean? Or simply arrive home for dinner three nights a week?
Once you know your destination, you can work backwards:
✅ What income will your ideal lifestyle require?
✅ What profit must the business generate?
✅ What responsibilities need to be delegated?
✅ What systems need to be documented?
✅ Who needs to be trained to make decisions without you?
Your business should be the vehicle that takes you towards the life you want. It should not become the destination—or take over the entire journey.
You don’t need to have every detail figured out today. Start by deciding what you want your life to look and feel like, then identify the first step towards it.
Before you build a bigger business, decide where you want it to take you.

🧱 The Story of the Three Bricklayers
After the Great Fire of London in 1666, architect Christopher Wren was rebuilding St Paul's Cathedral.
One day he came across three bricklayers, all working hard on the same scaffold. He asked each one: "What are you doing?"
The first said: "I'm laying bricks to feed my family."
The second said: "I'm building a wall."
The third said: "I'm building a great cathedral."
Same scaffold. Same bricks. Same wall. Three completely different jobs — at least in their minds. And that gap in perspective is the whole game in business.
Look around your own team and you'll probably see all three. The real risk isn't having "bricklayers" — it's that no one has ever shown them the cathedral.
That's the real work of leadership: not just building a great business, but building people who see themselves as cathedral builders. 🏛️

🚗 How smooth is your ride?
Most business owners are working hard — but few stop to ask how am I actually going?
Here's a quick exercise: draw a car with four wheels. Score each one out of 10:
🔧 Personal Satisfaction
🔧 Business Independence
🔧 Operational Freedom
🔧 Future Potential
If your wheels are wildly different sizes, that's not a smooth ride — that's the bumpy, exhausting version of running a business.
Your lowest wheel isn't a failure. It's your biggest opportunity.
Grab a pen, draw your car, and find out where 90 days of focused effort could make the biggest difference. 👇

🕐 Busy is not the same as in control.
Most business owners we speak with didn't start out with a system for running their day — they started with grit, reputation and a willingness to figure it out. That gets you a long way. But it has a ceiling.
The owners who feel calm and in control usually aren't smarter or luckier. They just have a handful of small daily habits that compound over time. Here are 5 worth building in:
1️⃣ Protect time ON the business, not just in it — block 30-60 mins in your calendar. If it's not scheduled, it doesn't happen.
2️⃣ Focus on one thing at a time — small, focused wins build momentum.
3️⃣ Look after your health — even 30 minutes of movement protects everything else.
4️⃣ Invest 15 minutes a day in yourself — a book, a podcast, something that grows your thinking.
5️⃣ Know your numbers — every car has a dashboard. Does your business?
None of these are complicated. The power is in the consistency, not perfection. And if you slip up, that's normal — get back on track quickly.
👉 If you'd like help building the "dashboard" for your business — the numbers that show you what's really working — that's exactly the conversation we have with clients every day at RGA.

🦷 "But they signed a contractor agreement..." That's exactly what one dental clinic thought too — until the Administrative Review Tribunal disagreed.
The clinic engaged an oral health therapist as a contractor and didn't pay super on her earnings. The Tribunal looked past the paperwork and found she was, in substance, an employee for super guarantee purposes — leaving the clinic on the hook for the super guarantee charge, plus penalties and interest.
Why? A few key factors tipped it into employment territory:
✅ She worked as part of the clinic's team, not as an independent operator
✅ She couldn't genuinely send someone else to do the work in her place
✅ Her pay moved up and down based on what was billed to patients — more like a wage than an invoice
The takeaway for every business owner: if you use contractors, subbies, or commission-based workers — in trades, allied health, sales, consulting, admin, anywhere — the label on the contract means far less than what's actually happening day to day. The ATO asks: who controls the work? Can they delegate it? Are they really running their own business?
And here's the sting: super guarantee charge isn't tax deductible, it comes with interest and penalties, and it can go back years once it's picked up.
If you're not 100% sure your contractor arrangements would survive this kind of scrutiny, let's have that conversation now — not after the ATO starts asking questions. 📞 07 3289 1700

💰 Did you know the ATO could be sitting on super that belongs to you?
Thousands of Aussies have super they don't even know about — and it might be yours.
This can happen when:
🔹 You've got an old, inactive low-balance account that got transferred to the ATO
🔹 Your employer set aside super guarantee payments that never made it to your fund
🔹 A government super payment hasn't landed in an active account yet
The fix takes minutes — just check myGov, ATO online services, or the ATO app.
If you find money sitting there, get it moved into your active fund so it can actually start earning for you again instead of gathering dust.
Want a hand checking, or want to chat about what it means for your super strategy? Reach out to the team at RGA — we're always happy to help. 📞 07 3289 1700
