Walsh Accounting Numbers run in our blood - as a family business we are committed to working in partnership with our clients.

On 9 November 1980, Lionel Walsh established Walsh Accounting at its original location in Beech Street, Barcaldine. The firm has enjoyed steady growth over 36 years and has achieved its goal of becoming specialist business and community accountants and auditors. Walsh Accounting has grown from a one person operation to a firm providing employment for ten people and servicing clients throughout Queensland and beyond. The firm attributes its growth to its quest for quality and the benefits this delivers to its clients. The partners and all the people who work at Walsh Accounting are aware that quality is not a destination but a never-ending journey involving continual learning, training, improvements in processes and adoption of new technologies.

We began our accounting practice on the top floor of this building (next to the Radio theatre). We had to purchase the equipment and furniture at a cost of $1500. As a one-income family with seven children, we did not have $1500, so we asked the bank for a loan. On the day the loan was granted, we gave a cheque for $1500 to the seller and moved in on Saturday 8 November 1980. We did not open the doors until Sunday 9 November because we wanted to get everything in order on the Saturday. (I was a public servant so I could only work as an accountant on weekends and nights).

On Saturday morning, two men walked up the stairs. Were these to be our first clients? One of them said “I’m here to collect my 4-drawer filing cabinet”. I told him it was ours. We had just bought it. He said that it didn’t not belong to the bloke who sold it to us. He had only borrowed it.

A few minutes later, four big men arrived and said, “We’re here to collect the safe”. A little later another person came to collect the desk, and so it went on until Marg and I were left standing glumly on a rug in an empty room. Then someone came to collect the rug.

It was not our finest hour.

We went looking for the man who had received our cheque two days before, but he had not turned up for work the next day and in fact has never been seen since.
