Division 7A catches more business owners than almost any other rule, and most only find out when the return gets lodged two years later.

That 67% figure is real, and so is the fix if you catch it before 30 June.

The full video walks through how the rule works and what to do if you're already in one.

There isn’t one answer that works for every business owner.

Your business structure, profit, cash position and personal circumstances can all affect what makes sense for you.

DC breaks down the difference and what to consider before deciding.
And if you're still not sure how you should be paying yourself, that's a conversation worth having with your accountant.

The financial year might only be three months old, but the calendar year is nearly done.

So here's a useful question:
What would need to happen between now and December for you to call 2026 a good year?

Not ten goals.

Pick the one or two things that actually matter and put the numbers behind them.

Your September-quarter BAS is coming up.

But before treating it as another compliance job to tick off, use it as a reason to look at what's happened in the first quarter of the financial year.

How have sales moved?

What happened to expenses?

Is cash getting tighter or stronger?

Are you where you expected to be?

For standard quarterly reporters, the September-quarter BAS is generally due 28 October, although different arrangements may apply when lodging through an agent.

Compliance matters. But the numbers can tell you much more.

September marks the end of the first quarter of the financial year, which makes it a good time for a quick numbers check.

Start with these three.

1. Revenue vs your FY26/27 target
2. Your current profit margin
3. How much you’re owed in unpaid invoices

Are sales tracking where you expected them to be?

Are you actually keeping enough of that revenue after costs?

And how much of the money you’ve earned is still sitting in someone else’s bank account?

If something looks off now, you’ve still got nine months of the financial year to do something about it.

Don’t wait until EOFY to find out you weren’t on track.

Hiring is one of the biggest growth decisions a business can make.

And the salary is only one part of the equation.

Before signing the contract, understand the true cost of the role, what it's expected to contribute and what happens to your cash flow if growth takes longer than expected.

Sometimes the numbers say hire.

Sometimes they say wait.

Either way, it's better to know first.
