It's 6:40 pm on a Thursday, and you're still at the desk. Three quotes have been sitting since Tuesday because you check every one before it goes out, and the client who wanted a price on Monday has gone with whoever answered first.

Sound familiar? Busy every week, and the numbers never match the effort?

That might be one of the hidden costs of staying too involved in the day-to-day. There are three places it shows up:

✔️ Work sits waiting on your review
✔️ Your team stops deciding, so nothing moves faster than you do
✔️ The pricing and planning work keeps sliding to next week

Swipe through to see how each one plays out, with an example.

Want to know what staying this involved is costing you? Track one ordinary week and write down every task someone else could do with the right instructions.

If every invoice stopped being paid this Friday, how many weeks could you still pay your team?

Most owners cannot answer that straight away, but it is important that you know your number. That number is your buffer.

Quick maths:
✔️ Add up your fixed monthly costs, wages included
✔️ Divide your available cash by that number
✔️ That is your buffer, in months

Three months is a sensible floor for most small businesses. Trades and seasonal businesses usually need more.

If you know your number and do not like it, now is the time to build your ideal buffer. If you do not know your number, make it this week’s priority to find out. 👉 growthiq.com.au/contact

Payday Super has been in place for a quarter now. How has the change affected your business?

For some businesses, moving from quarterly super payments to paying with every pay run has been a significant adjustment. For our clients and those who got ahead of the change, planning the extra cash-flow requirements early made the transition much easier.

If you’re still finding your feet, there are steps you can take now to get your payroll process back on track and stay compliant.

The ATO is matching your payroll reports against what each fund actually received, payday by payday, and sorting employers into three groups:

🟢 Low risk: super paid on time for every payday, with any slip corrected promptly. The ATO says it will not review you.

🟠 Medium risk: there were missed payments, but every unpaid amount is cleared within 28 days of the quarter ending. For the September quarter, that’s 28 October 2026.

🔴 High risk: amounts are still outstanding after that, or there was no genuine attempt to pay on payday.

So, what can you do now?

✔️ Pay super with every pay run, rather than waiting until the end of the quarter
✔️ Send payments early enough for the fund to receive them within 7 business days of payday
✔️ Check new starters’ fund details before their first pay
✔️ Reconcile against the date the fund received the money, not the date you sent it

And if you think you’ve missed a payment, don’t wait. List every payday since 1 July, check the receipt dates and clear anything outstanding.

Being proactive can help you keep your cash flow under control and stay on top of your compliance.

👉 Save this graphic and keep it with your payroll process.

📘 For the full breakdown of the three ATO groups, read our blog, ‘Payday Super’s First Quarter Is Ending. Which ATO Group Are You In?’, on our website: https://growthiq.com.au/payday-super-which-ato-group-are-you-in/

You quoted six hours. The job took six hours. So why did it cost you eight?

Did you count the drive, the yard pick-up, the run back to the supplier for one fitting?

None of it lands on the invoice, and all of it comes out of your margin.

Here’s what you can do:
✔️ Track your real hours on the next five jobs, gate to gate
✔️ Compare that to what you quoted
✔️ Fix the rate, not the effort

When did you last look at your numbers to plan ahead, not just look back?

Mortgage or super: where should your spare cash go first?

After a good year, chances are you want both. The security of a home that's fully yours, and a retirement you don't have to worry about.

For business owners, there's an extra reason to think it through. If you're a sole trader or in a partnership, no one pays super for you automatically, so your retirement savings can easily slip while the business comes first.

👉 Swipe through for the pros and cons of each, and the situations where one usually makes more sense than the other.

For a lot of owners, the answer ends up being a mix of both, depending on your age, your loan, your super and the life you're planning after the business.

When did you last put your prices up? If it's been over a year, your margin has probably been shrinking without you noticing.

Costs keep climbing: wages, materials, insurance, software. If your prices haven't kept up, you're covering the gap yourself.

Three signs it's time for a review:
⚠️ Costs have gone up, prices haven't
⚠️ You're busier than ever, but the profit isn't showing it
⚠️ It's been 12 months or more since you last looked

Not sure yours still stacks up? We can help: growthiq.com.au/contact

When a business owner we know is feeling stretched by growth, these are the five ideas we share first. Each one's from a book worth your time.

💠 Plan your profit instead of hoping for it. Decide what you want to earn, then build the business around it.
📖 Profit First for Tradies

💠 Get the business off your shoulders. If every quote and approval runs through you, you're the handbrake.
📖 The E-Myth Revisited

💠 Watch a few numbers, not forty. More reports don't mean more clarity.
📖 Simple Numbers, Straight Talk, Big Profits

💠 Build a business that runs without you. A week off is the real test.
📖 Clockwork

💠 Price for the value you deliver, not just to win the job.
📖 Someone Has to Be the Most Expensive, Why Not Make It You?

If growth is what's stretching you at the moment, which of the five would you start with?

More revenue is supposed to make life easier, but for a lot of growing businesses it does the opposite.

When you scale, the cracks you used to manage start to hurt. Margins that were always a bit thin. Reports that land three weeks late. Every decision still routed through you.

From what we see, three things separate the businesses that scale well from the ones that just get busier:

✔️ Numbers while they're still current, not a month after the fact
✔️ Margin tracked by job, service and client, so you know what's worth doing
✔️ A team you trust to make the call without you in the room

And margin matters more the bigger you get. On a $1.1M job, charging four cents less in the dollar is $44,000 gone.
