If you return to Australia before selling your property, can you avoid capital gains tax?
In this clip, Trevor Keidan explains why Australian tax residency depends on more than the number of days you spend in the country, and why your residency position at the time of a property sale can have important implications.
For Australians considering a return home, the timing of a property sale, periods of non-residency and the circumstances that determine tax residency all need to be considered carefully.
Residency is about your wider circumstances, not simply a day count. If a move and property sale are on the horizon, understanding your position early can help you make informed decisions.

Planning a move to Malaysia? Your financial life may need to move with you.
For British nationals and UK-connected individuals, relocating can affect more than where you live. Your UK tax residency, pensions, investments, estate planning and banking arrangements may all need to be considered alongside Malaysia’s own tax and residency rules.
Our Moving to Malaysia: 2026 Edition brings these considerations together in one practical guide, covering:
▫️ UK tax residency and split-year treatment
▫️ UK pensions and investments after relocating
▫️ The UK–Malaysia Double Taxation Agreement
▫️ Malaysia’s foreign-sourced income rules
▫️ MM2H residency requirements
▫️ Banking, currency and property considerations
▫️ A practical pre-departure checklist
Whether you're moving for work, retirement or a change of lifestyle, understanding how the different parts of your financial life connect can help you approach the move with greater clarity.

Moving country doesn’t necessarily mean you get to choose where you report your income or pay tax.
In this clip, Jonathan Brookes and Louise Powell discuss how easily cross-border tax complications can arise when investments, pensions and reporting obligations span more than one jurisdiction.
From a US citizen investing in a UK ISA, to someone living in Europe while receiving a UK pension, arrangements that appear straightforward in one country may be treated very differently in another.
The key is understanding how the relevant jurisdictions interact, and reviewing your investments and reporting obligations when your country of residence changes.

Only 9% of people in the UK are currently on track for what Pensions UK defines as a comfortable retirement.
But the more useful question is what a comfortable retirement looks like for you - and whether your current plans are likely to support it.
According to the latest Retirement Living Standards referenced in our article, a comfortable retirement is estimated to require £45,400 a year for one person or £62,700 for a couple. Your own requirements may be very different, depending on your lifestyle, existing pensions, other assets and the income you expect to need.
Our recent article looks at the figures behind the 9% statistic, how retirement income targets can be approached and why reviewing the gap between your current position and your intended retirement lifestyle matters.

Accessing US-held assets while living overseas can create a tax issue you may not encounter until you make a withdrawal.
Depending on your circumstances, US withholding tax may be deducted before the funds reach you. You may then also have tax obligations in your country of residence.
In this clip, Oscar Bugeja explains that where an applicable tax treaty or foreign tax credit provides relief from double taxation, there can still be administrative steps involved in establishing the correct treatment or reclaiming tax that has already been withheld.
This can be particularly unfamiliar if you've inherited a US account but have never lived or paid tax there yourself.
Understanding the position before you need to access the money gives you time to establish what may be withheld, what your local obligations could be and whether any relief or reclaim process may apply.

Living longer can change the assumptions behind your retirement plan.
A retirement lasting 20 or 30 years means your savings may need to support you through different stages of life, changing spending needs and periods of market uncertainty.
That makes the transition from building wealth to drawing from it an important part of retirement planning. How much income will you need? Where will it come from? How should withdrawals be managed? And how might your plan need to adapt as your circumstances change?
A retirement income plan can help you understand how your pensions, savings and investments fit together, and whether your planned level of spending is sustainable over the longer term.
