The Department of Employment and Labour has formally published the revised National Minimum Wage, which will take effect from 1 March 2026.
In accordance with the National Minimum Wage Act, No. 9 of 2018, the Minister of Employment and Labour has adjusted the minimum wage levels as follows:
The national minimum wage is set at R30.23 per ordinary hour worked.
Domestic workers and farm workers are also entitled to R30.23 per hour.
Employees participating in the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) are entitled to R16.62 per hour.
Workers engaged under learnership agreements, as contemplated in section 17 of the Skills Development Act, 1998 (Act No. 97 of 1998), are entitled to the applicable allowances as set out in Schedule 2 of the Government Gazette.

What is “Short Time”?
Short time means the company temporarily reduces working hours, and as a result, employees earn less for that period because pay is calculated based on hours worked.
The Labour Relations Act focuses on fairness and procedure.
The correct process is:
✅ the employer must consult with employees (or representatives)
✅ explain the business reason clearly
✅ confirm it’s temporary
✅ and give written notice of how it will work
Short Time must not be used to punish staff or target certain employees unfairly.”
