Tax Term Explained: What is an IRP5? π
Your IRP5 is an important document when completing your annual tax return β but what exactly does it mean?
An IRP5 is an official tax certificate issued by your employer that reflects your employment income earned during the year of assessment, as well as the employeesβ tax (PAYE) deducted or withheld.
Employers are required to issue employees with an IRP5/IT3(a) where remuneration has been paid or has become payable.
Not sure how your IRP5 affects your tax return? DVN & Co can help you understand your tax obligations and ensure your return is completed correctly.

FAQ: Do I need to submit a tax return? π€
Not everyone is required to submit an income tax return to SARS, but assuming you donβt need to can be a costly mistake.
Your obligation depends on factors such as your income, employment situation, and whether you meet SARSβ submission criteria.
Unsure whether you need to file? Use SARSβ questionnaire to help determine whether you are required to submit a return using this link: https://www.sars.gov.za/types-of-tax/personal-income-tax/do-you-need-to-submit-a-return/

π‘ Tax Tip
If more than 50% of your income is earned from commission, keeping accurate records throughout the year can make tax time much easier.
Here are a few good habits to get into:
βοΈ Keep proof of valid business and vehicle expenses.
βοΈ Keep proof of home office expenses (where applicable).
βοΈ Maintain an up-to-date travel logbook.
βοΈ Consider applying for a fixed percentage tax directive if it suits your circumstances.
Every taxpayer's situation is unique, and eligibility to claim certain expenses depends on your individual circumstances and the requirements set by SARS.

π Myth: "If SARS doesn't contact me, I don't need to submit a tax return."
β
Fact: SARS won't always notify you if you're required to submit a return. Your filing obligation depends on your individual tax circumstances, not whether you've received a reminder.
Assuming you don't need to file could result in unnecessary penalties and interest.
If you're unsure whether you're required to submit a tax return, it's always best to check before the filing deadline.

π DID YOU KNOW?
Many taxpayers assume that once their tax return has been submitted and assessed, the process is complete. However, SARS may still request supporting documents after your assessment has been issued.
To avoid unnecessary stress, make sure you keep all relevant tax documents, certificates, receipts, and supporting records safely stored for at least 5 years.
Being prepared can make any verification process quicker and easier.
