“I have a side hustle / side business in the evening - can I still claim HOD on that?”

💡 Quick Canada Tax Tip: Yes - you can claim home office expenses for your side hustle in Canada, even if it’s part-time or done in the evenings - as long as it qualifies as a business and meets CRA rules. 🇨🇦

Here’s the deal 👇

If you earn income from a registered side business or sole-proprietorship, you can include business-use-of-home expenses on your tax return. This means rent/mortgage interest, utilities, insurance, property taxes, internet, and more that relate to the workspace you use for that business can be deducted - as long as the space is used regularly and mainly for business purposes.

For a part-time evening hustle, CRA says:
• It must be actively used to earn business income.
• Deductible expenses are prorated based on business use.
• You cannot claim more than the net income from the business - you can’t use these deductions to create a tax loss.

So yes - as long as your side hustle is legitimate business income, you’re tracking your hours and expenses, and the space meets CRA criteria, you can claim HOS even if most of your work happens after your day job. 🇨🇦📊

If you’re an employer paying salaries, wages, bonuses or any employment income, you must register for a payroll account with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) before your first remittance due date - that’s typically the 15th of the month after you first withhold deductions from pay.

Once registered, your remittance schedule depends on your payroll size - monthly, quarterly or accelerated - and missing deadlines can lead to penalties and interest.

Whether you’re a startup, contractor, or growing business - get your payroll remittance set up the right way, right from the start.

Filing your taxes early is great.
Filing them without the right documents? Not so much.

Every tax season, Canadians miss out on refunds and credits simply because a form or receipt was overlooked.

Before you file your Canada income tax return, make sure you’ve gathered:
✔ Income slips (T4, T4A, T5, T3, T4E)
✔ Tuition forms (T2202, TL11A)
✔ RRSP & FHSA contribution slips
✔ Childcare, medical & donation receipts
✔ Work-from-home and freelance expense records

Most of these are already available through your employer, bank, or CRA My Account — you just need to know where to look.
