Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department

Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department Remember to always call 911 in an emergency. This is OWL's Official page. We welcome your positive comments. Thank you for your support.

In September 1938, the Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department, was officially incorporated. It was two years of hard work for a group of concerned citizens who recognized the need for a Fire Department in the area. Many of them put up personal property and their own money to secure loans to build a building to house the apparatus and start the department. Sometimes they had to "pass the hat" to pay electric and other bills monthly. Before OWL VFD the closest Fire Department’'s were in Pen Daw (Fairfax Station 11) to the north, Manassas to the west and Fredericksburg to the south. The first station was in the Town of Occoquan on the corner of Washington and Mill Street, which was Station 2 in PWC. You can still see the concrete pad where it was located. From there they built a building that is now the VFW in Occoquan. In 1958 they opened a second Station on Jeff Davis Hwy. They were numbered Station 2-1 in Occoquan and Station 2-2 on Jefferson Davis Highway. From there, OWL moved to the current Station 2 on F Street, opened up the Lake Ridge Station 14, and the Route 1 station, 12, relocated to Montgomery Avenue. OWL VFD’s continued success is because of the foresight and hard work of those who built the foundation and the dedication and commitment of our members who serve today. Even from our humble beginnings, OWL VFD has historically strategically planned for disaster events, keeping up on the latest training, equipment and education available. OWL VFD invests thousands of hours in professional training and certification courses. Our care and dedication to Fire and Rescue is reflected in our efforts of staying up to date and ready for the task. OWL VFD is one of the largest and busiest volunteer fire departments in the United States with over 200 members. OWL VFD provides fire suppression, EMS care, and rescue services to 80,000 residents in our 27 square mile area through the operation of three fire stations. OWL volunteer Firefighters and EMTs work the 6 pm to 6 am shift, five days a week, plus 24/7 holidays and weekends.

🔥 October 4-10 is National Fire Prevention Week! 🔥

This year’s National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) theme, Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower, focuses on preventing fires caused by lithium-ion batteries and everyday charging devices.

Today's fire safety tip ⤵
When charging on a plane, keep portable charging devices on the tray table. Do not charge devices in overhead compartments and never charge e-cigarettes or vapes on a plane. If a battery overheats or fails, the flight crew must be able to respond quickly.

This year’s National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) theme, Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower, focuses on preventing fires caused by lithium-ion batteries and everyday charging devices.

Today's fire safety tip ⤵
Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging. These batteries store more energy, and fires can grow quickly if they fail.

🤩Keeping our apparatus clean isn’t just about appearance—it's critical to maintain readiness and safety.

🧼Regularly washing fire department vehicles helps remove dirt, road salt, and contaminants that can cause corrosion and long-term damage. A clean apparatus helps crews to easily spot leaks, wear, or potential issues before they become major problems.

😎Beyond maintenance, a well-kept fleet reflects our members' pride, professionalism, and dedication. When we respond, our community knows they can trust equipment that’s cared for and ready to perform at its best.

Whether you're looking to gain new skills, give back, or grow into a leadership role—there’s a place for you at OWL. Learn more and start your journey at www.owlvfd.org/join-us

🕊 This past April, our OWL family mourned the loss of Life Member Thomas “Sully” Sullivan, a dedicated volunteer, veteran, public servant, and friend.

In August, Sully was laid to rest with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. Department President Todd Hewitt, former Department Chief/President Bill Spicer, OWL Life Member Jeff Scheulen, EMT Kaitlin Scherzer, and Ambulance Driver Matt Hane joined family and friends at the service to honor Sully.

Sully served our nation with distinction, retiring as a Major in the U.S. Army and earning the prestigious Special Forces Tab. Following his military career, he continued serving the community as a crime analyst with the Prince William County Police Department for 27 years.

For more than two decades, Sully faithfully served the Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department. In recognition of his dedication and commitment, he was awarded Life Member status in 2007.

Many members and patrons will fondly remember him as one of the familiar voices of OWL Bingo, where he served as a caller.

Sully's dedication to service leaves behind a lasting legacy.

Today's fire safety tip ⤵
Stop using your device right away if the battery smells strange, is warm to the touch, makes popping noises, changes in shape or color, or if you see smoke. If it is safe, move the device away from anything that can catch fire. A damaged battery can overheat and start a fire.

This year’s National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) theme, Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower, focuses on preventing fires caused by lithium-ion batteries and everyday charging devices.

Today's fire safety tip ⤵
Charge on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or floor. Beds, couches, and pillows can trap heat and block airflow, which can cause a battery to overheat.
