We see this a lot here in Oregon.

Parents who’ve built something over time,
a home, a business, a retirement…

and want to make sure it actually gets to their kids and grandkids.

Not eaten up by taxes.
Not tied up in probate.
Not disrupted by a late-life care event.

But this usually isn’t just an “estate plan.”

It turns into a series of conversations:
• Beneficiary designations
• Trust vs will decisions
• Long-term care planning
• Family conversations around expectations

That’s where most of the work actually happens.

The families who transfer wealth cleanly to the next generation
didn’t get lucky.

They planned for it.

Usually 10 to 15 years before they needed to.

Here’s something that surprises a lot of people:

When you claim Social Security can be just as important as how much you’ve saved.

Claim early…
and your benefit is permanently lower.

Wait a few years…
and that monthly number can increase significantly.

Over a 20 to 30 year retirement, that difference adds up.

This is one of the most important decisions pre-retirees face.

And one of the most overlooked.

Because it’s not just:
“When should I take it?”

It’s:
• What other income do I have?
• What does my tax situation look like?
• How does this fit into the bigger plan?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

But there is a strategy that fits your situation.

Meet Tom and Linda.

Tom’s a senior operations manager.
Linda’s been a school nurse for 25 years.

Both 61.
House is paid off.
Over $1M saved.
Decades of doing the right things.

By most measures, they’re in a great position.

But when we sat down and started mapping things out, a few important decisions came up:
• Most of their savings were in pre-tax accounts, which creates future tax considerations
• Their investment mix hadn’t really shifted as retirement got closer
• Linda had a pension decision that could swing things significantly depending on how it’s handled

None of these are problems.

But they are decisions that matter.

Once we worked through it and built a plan around their goals, things became a lot clearer.

Rather than guessing, they had a framework for evaluating income, taxes, investments, and pension choices together.

If you’re in your late 50s or early 60s and starting to think through these kinds of decisions, this is usually the stage where planning starts to matter a lot more.

Most people we talk to aren’t sure if they’re on track for retirement.
Not because they haven’t thought about it.
They have.
But thinking about it and actually running the numbers

are two very different things.
Here’s the part that usually surprises people:
The gap between where they are

and where they need to be…
is often smaller than they think.
Not always. But more often than not.
And the earlier you look at it, the more options you have.
More flexibility.

More time to adjust.

Less pressure later.
The worst time to figure this out?
Right before you need the answer.

Reaching out to a financial planner for the first time isn’t easy.

For a lot of people, it means sitting down with someone new and talking about money.

Not just numbers.

Where you are.
Where you thought you’d be by now.
What you’re unsure about.

That takes a level of honesty most people don’t love volunteering.

We don’t take that lightly.

Whether you’ve been thinking about it for a while or just decided to finally reach out, showing up matters.

And to be clear, we’re not always the right fit.

That’s okay.

What matters is that you walk away with something useful.
A clearer understanding, a better set of questions, or a next step.

We’d rather help you move in the right direction than try to force something that doesn’t make sense.

If you’ve been on the fence about reaching out, to us or anyone, just know that step is respected.

We sit across from people on both ends of the spectrum.

Someone making $300k+
Still carrying debt, no real plan, negative net worth.

And someone making $60k
Clear plan, consistent habits, on track to retire early.

Same world. Very different outcomes.

So no, income isn’t the variable.

Strategy is.
• How you manage cash flow
• How you invest
• How you plan for taxes
• How intentional you are with decisions

That’s what moves the needle.

Making more money helps. No doubt.

But without a plan behind it, it usually just means:
bigger lifestyle, same problems.

And with the right strategy?

You don’t need perfect income.
You just need direction.

Roth conversions get talked about like they’re simple.

“Just pay the tax now and never worry about it again.”

Sometimes that works.

But if you live in Oregon, there’s another layer.

You’re not just paying federal taxes on that conversion.
You’re also paying state income tax, up to 9.9%.

That changes the math.
So the real question isn’t:
“Should I do a Roth conversion?”

It’s:
• How much should I convert this year?
• Should I spread it out over multiple years?
• Am I pushing into a higher tax bracket?
• Will this impact Medicare premiums later?
• How does this affect Social Security taxation?

That’s where most people get tripped up.

Because this isn’t a one-time decision.

It’s a multi-year strategy.

Done right, it can save a significant amount in taxes over time.
Done wrong, it can create a bigger tax bill than expected.

This comes up a lot for families.

“I want to help my kids with college…
I just don’t want to put my own retirement at risk.”

That’s a very real tradeoff.

Most people don’t need a perfect answer here.
They need a clear one.

What we typically walk through:

• What they can afford to contribute comfortably
• Where the line is between helping and overextending
• How that decision impacts their long-term plan

Because it’s easy to say yes in the moment.

But without context, that decision can create pressure later on.

In this case, they didn’t say yes to everything.

But they landed on a number that made sense for their situation.

One that supported their kids…
without creating future stress for themselves.

That’s the difference between guessing and having a plan.

Most financial plans look great when everything goes right.

But real life rarely follows the perfect scenario.

Markets fluctuate. Expenses change. Life events happen.

That is why stress testing a financial plan can be so valuable. It helps evaluate how a strategy may perform under different scenarios and whether adjustments might be needed.

A thoughtful plan should be able to adapt as life evolves.

Most people don’t avoid financial planning because they don’t believe in it.

They avoid it because life gets in the way.

It usually sounds like:
“I’ve been meaning to get to that.”

And honestly, that’s fair.

When you’re juggling a career, family, and everything else,
it’s easy for something like this to sit in the background.

But here’s what we’ve seen over and over:

Financial planning doesn’t feel urgent…
until it is.

And when it finally does,
you’re often working with fewer options.

The people who start earlier tend to have:
• More flexibility
• Better tax opportunities
• More control over decisions later on

If it’s been sitting on your to-do list for a while,
this is a nudge to move it up.
