Last month’s GRAMMYS On The Hill Advocacy Day allowed Members of Congress to hear first-hand from artist advocates about the impact of AI on the music community and the urgent need to protect human creators. The real-world stories shared by our artist advocates came at a crucial time as momentum continues to build in Congress in support of advancing the NO FAKES Act.

A major win for creators’ freedom of expression.

Yesterday, Governor Wes Moore signed the Protecting Artists’ Creative Expression (PACE) Act into law, making Maryland the third state in the nation to pass legislation limiting the use of lyrics and other creative works as evidence in criminal proceedings.

Artists should be free to tell stories without fear that their words will be taken out of context and used against them. This practice disproportionately impacts Black and Brown creators and threatens the freedom of expression that drives music and culture forward.

The Recording Academy has advocated for the PACE Act since its inception, working directly with Delegate Marlon Amprey and Senator Charles Sydnor to help move this legislation forward through member advocacy, public education, and testimony to the Maryland legislature.
