Fall is here, and the tax extension deadline is sneaking up! 🍂

If you filed an extension for your 2025 individual federal tax return, your filing deadline is generally October 15, 2026.

Now is a good time to gather your remaining documents and check in about your return. Remember: an extension to file did not extend the deadline to pay any tax owed. Special deadline relief may apply.

Questions about your next step? Call Sanderson Tax and Bookkeeping at 361-693-5878.

Save this reminder—or share it with someone who filed an extension!

Interest rates for the fourth quarter of 2026

The IRS announced that interest rates will remain the same for the calendar quarter beginning Oct. 1, 2026.

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today announced that interest rates will remain the same for the calendar quarter beginning Oct. 1, 2026.

For individuals, the rate for overpayments and underpayments will be 7% per year, compounded daily. Here is a complete list of the new rates:

• 7% interest on overpayments (payments exceeding the amount owed); 6% for corporations.
• 4.5% on the portion of a corporate overpayment exceeding $10,000.
• 7% interest on underpayments (taxes owed but not fully paid).
• 9% interest on large corporate underpayments.

Under the Internal Revenue Code, the rate of interest is determined on a quarterly basis. For taxpayers other than corporations, the overpayment and underpayment rate is the federal short-term rate plus 3 percentage points.

Generally, in the case of a corporation, the underpayment rate is the federal short-term rate plus 3 percentage points and the overpayment rate is the federal short-term rate plus 2 percentage points. The rate for large corporate underpayments is the federal short-term rate plus 5 percentage points. The rate on the portion of a corporate overpayment of tax exceeding $10,000 for a taxable period is the federal short-term rate plus one-half (0.5) of a percentage point.

The interest rates announced today are computed from the federal short-term rate determined during July 2026. See the revenue ruling for details.

Revenue Ruling 2026-15 PDF announcing the rates of interest, is attached and will appear in Internal Revenue Bulletin 2026-36, dated Aug. 31, 2026.

☕ Tuesday morning tax prep—without the paperwork!

Take a moment to jot down what changed this year: a new job, marriage, a new baby, or starting a business. These changes are worth discussing with your tax preparer.

Keep that list with your tax records so we can review it together. A little preparation now makes tax season easier! 💙
