There is something so rewarding about watching a plan actually work.
Every year around tax season, I find myself feeling especially proud of the clients I do tax prep and planning for—especially the ones who trust the process and follow the advice I give them. Because when they do, year after year, they get to see the fruit of that discipline. And that fruit looks like less stress, more confidence, and not having to pay an excessive amount in taxes.
Today, I want to celebrate a few clients in particular.
When I first started doing their taxes, they owed every single year. So I asked them one simple question: What outcome do you want to see when tax time comes around?
And each of them said the same thing: “I want the amount I owe to go down every year.”
So we made a plan.
Not a guess. Not a hope. A strategy.
For three years, they stayed the course. And little by little, the amount they owed started coming down. Then this year? It disappeared.
What makes this even more powerful is that they are now making about 50% more than they were when I first started working with them. Their tax bracket changed twice. Naturally, they came to me worried, thinking this might be the year everything unraveled. They had made some changes to their paycheck withholdings and felt like they had not corrected them in time to avoid owing.
But the plan held.
No, they did not get the refund they could have gotten if every adjustment had been made exactly when advised. But the bigger win? They did not owe.
That is worth celebrating.
This is why listening to your tax professional matters. A good CPA or tax preparer should not just plug in numbers and hand you a result. They should help you understand the strategy behind the outcome, so tax day does not feel like a surprise attack every year.
If your current tax professional is not helping you build a plan, understand your numbers, and move toward a better outcome, it may be time to find someone who will.
And no, I am not taking on a bunch of new tax clients—I am staying loyal to my faithful few. But ask nicely, and I just might refer you to someone good in your area or share a little advice to help you stop dreading “TAX DAY.”
A good outcome on tax day usually does not happen by accident. It happens by strategy.
