Objective Wealth CFP® - Fee Only Financial Planner

"Should I sell the house I love and move to a 55+ community—without blowing up my tax plan?"

This was the core question from a recent client meeting. The client envisioned a new lifestyle with walking trails and more time with her grandkids, but the financial unknowns were holding her back. She was worried about capital gains tax, new HOA fees, and making a mistake she couldn't undo.

Instead of giving a simple "yes" or "no," we mapped out a clear financial path. We focused on two key areas:

✅ Cash-Flow Planning: We projected the net profit from her home sale and stress-tested her future budget, making sure it could support travel, hobbies, and even renting for a year.

✅ Tax Strategy: We adjusted her IRA withholdings to pre-pay just enough in taxes. This gives her the future flexibility for a strategic Roth conversion or an annuity withdrawal without a surprise tax bill.

The result: Options!

Big life decisions feel much less daunting when your cash flow and taxes have a clearer picture. It turns fear into confidence.

What decision are you postponing until the numbers feel clear?

When RSU's vest, they are considered taxable income. Whether you sell the shares or not.

But beware of the underwithholding trap! 🚨 Many employers withhold tax at a flat rate of 22%, just like they do for bonuses. This rate may fall short of your actual tax bracket, potentially leading to an unexpected tax bill.

Stay ahead of the game! Plan ahead and avoid the pitfalls of underwitholding.

Let's make sure your financial planning is on point and proactive.

Your ESPP is a fantastic tool, but it can lead to a hidden risk: concentration.

When a large percentage of your net worth is tied up in your employer's stock (401k + RSUs + ESPP), your financial well-being is heavily linked to the performance of a single company. It’s like putting all your eggs in one basket.

A core part of a sound financial strategy is diversification. That often means systematically selling a portion of your ESPP shares, even if you love your company, to reinvest in other areas. It's not about being disloyal; it's about being financially smart.

"It's the final quarter of 2025! How's your 401(k) contribution goal looking?"

No matter where you are, it's not too late to make a final push! Even a 1% increase for the last few months of the year can make a difference."

"Happy Labor Day! Today we celebrate our hard work. But is your compensation package working as hard as you are? 📈

Let's talk about a benefit that can feel like a secret pay raise: the Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP).

In simple terms, an ESPP lets you buy your company's stock at a discount—15% off the market price! It's a structured way to build ownership in the company you help grow every day.

Does your company offer one? If so, you could be missing out on one of the best wealth-building tools in your benefits package."

“Paying off a mortgage feels great—until you realize the wrong funding source could wipe out thousands in health-insurance credits.”

In yesterday’s review, a retired couple wanted to clear their final mortgage balance.

The wrinkle?

Every dollar we pull shows up on their tax return, and that number decides how much Affordable Care Act help they receive.

We mapped out a three-step plan:
1) Let their high-yield cash bucket continue doing the heavy lifting for monthly expenses
2) Get the exact mortgage payoff amount for the October payoff.
3) Detailed tax analysis to ensure funds are drawn from the proper accounts (Roth/Pre-Tax/Brokerage)

One wrong adjustment could mean keeping or losing a subsidy worth several mortgage payments.

Before writing a big check, make sure you have considered both the IRS and healthcare rules.

📢 Do you receive compensation via RSUs? 📢

As we approach the end of the year, it's crucial to review your RSUs and tax withholdings. Here are a few key points to consider:

1. **Understand Vesting Schedules**: Make sure you know when your RSUs vest and the tax implications.

2. **Tax Withholdings**: Verify that enough taxes are being withheld to avoid surprises come tax season. RSUs are subject to income tax upon vesting, whether you sell or not.

3. **Plan Ahead**: Consider selling some of your vested shares to cover tax liabilities AND diversify your portfolio.

4. **Adjust Sell to Cover**: The default 22% for tax withholding is often too little to cover the full tax liability. If your company allows, considering adjust the % to match your tax liability

Taking these steps now can help you avoid unexpected tax bills and align your investments with your financial goals. Don't wait—plan ahead and stay informed!

💡 Celebrating 25 Years of Advisor's Alpha 💡

It's been 25 years since Vanguard introduced the Advisor's Alpha framework, revolutionizing financial advice! This concept shifted the focus from trying to outperform the market to generating substantial and more predictable value through essential services.

Since its introduction in 2001, advisors who have adopted this approach have led to a significant transformation in how advisory portfolios are managed, moving towards more transparent, positive-sum activities.

Key achievements over the past two and a half decades:

Advisors widely adopted strategies like financial planning, tax optimization, and behavioral coaching, along with asset allocation and low-cost fund selection.

This collaboration led to material improvement in advised clients' investment outcomes and advisory practice outcomes.

Research shows advisors following these best practices can add up to, or even exceed, 3% in net returns for their clients.
