🐄 Cow Tip Tuesday: Not Every Deposit Is Income

Money entered the business bank account—but that doesn’t automatically make it revenue.

A deposit might actually be:

• Money the owner contributed
• Loan proceeds
• A transfer between business accounts
• A refund or reimbursement
• Payment on an invoice already recorded

Categorizing every deposit as sales can overstate your income and make your financial reports misleading.

The amount matters—but so does where it came from. 📊

Clean books = a calm mind.

We laugh because we’ve all seen it—but a good client relationship shouldn’t feel like a battle. 😄

At Cash Cow Accounting, we believe in fair, transparent pricing and clear expectations from the start. We’re also available when our clients have questions, need clarification, or want help understanding their numbers.

If a request falls outside the original scope, we’ll discuss the options and pricing before moving forward—no surprises, no disappearing acts.

🐄 **Cow Tip Tuesday: A Bank Feed Is Not Bookkeeping**

Connecting your bank account to accounting software is a great start—but the software is only bringing in the transactions. It doesn’t necessarily know:

• What each purchase was for
• Whether it belongs to the business
• Which category is correct
• Whether a transaction was duplicated
• Whether anything is missing

Bank feeds collect the information. Proper bookkeeping reviews, categorizes, matches, and reconciles it.

Automation helps—but your books still need a human who knows what they’re looking at. 📊

🐄 Cow Tip Tuesday: A Matching Bank Balance Doesn’t Always Mean Your Books Are Correct

Your bookkeeping software shows the same balance as your bank account. Everything must be accurate…right?

Not necessarily!

Two balances can match even when transactions are:

* Duplicated
* Missing
* Categorized incorrectly
* Recorded for the wrong amount
* Assigned to the wrong account

A proper bank reconciliation compares the transactions in your books with the transactions on the bank statement. It also accounts for timing differences, such as outstanding checks and deposits that haven’t cleared yet.

Matching balances are reassuring—but reconciliation is what confirms that the activity behind those balances is complete and accurate.

Don’t just check the ending number. Make sure the path getting there is correct, too. 🐄📊

🐄 Cow Tip Tuesday: A Loan Payment Is Not Entirely an Expense

Your business makes a $500 loan payment. That means the business has a $500 expense…right?

Not quite!

A loan payment is usually divided into two parts:

💰 Principal reduces the amount your business owes. It is not an expense.

📉 Interest is the cost of borrowing the money and is generally recorded as an expense.

For example, if a $500 payment includes $400 of principal and $100 of interest, only the $100 appears as an interest expense. The other $400 reduces the loan balance on your balance sheet.

Recording the entire payment as an expense understates your profit and leaves the loan balance in your books incorrect.

The reverse is also important: Receiving loan proceeds generally doesn’t count as business income—it creates a debt that must be repaid.

Your bank account shows that money moved. Your books should show why it moved. 🐄📊

Accounting **uses** math—but it isn’t math. 🤯

A calculator can tell you that 2 + 2 = 4. It can’t tell you whether that $4 is income, an expense, an asset, a liability, or an owner’s draw.

That’s where the accounting comes in. 🐄📊
