🦷 Dental Practice Owners: Are You Looking at the Past or Planning for the Future?

Most dental practice owners review financial reports to see how their practice performed last month. But what numbers should you be watching to help predict future performance?

In this Facebook Live broadcast, I discuss the difference between Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Leading Indicators (LIs) and four important leading indicators every dental practice owner should consider:

āœ… New Patients Scheduled
āœ… Case Acceptance & Unscheduled Treatment
āœ… Hygiene Reappointment Rate
āœ… Cancellations & No-Shows

Here's the difference: Your financial statements help explain what has already happened. Leading indicators can help you anticipate potential changes in production, collections, cash flow, and profitability.

A practice can look profitable today while its leading indicators are signaling potential problems ahead.

Are you monitoring these four indicators in your dental practice?

Is your business profitable—but you still find yourself wondering where the cash went?

In this Facebook Live, I walk through how to build a simple cash flow projection in Excel to help you look ahead instead of simply reacting to what has already happened.

I cover:

šŸ’° Beginning cash, inflows, outflows, net cash flow, and ending cash
šŸ“Š How to project cash flow 12–18 months ahead
āš ļø How to identify potential cash shortages before they become problems
šŸ“ˆ Ways to improve cash flow and make better financial decisions

Remember: Profit does not always equal cash in the bank.

The goal of a cash flow projection isn't to predict every dollar perfectly. It's to see what's coming early enough to make better decisions.

I recently took on a business owner who was actually doing something I wish more business owners would do:

They were projecting their cash flow.

Not just checking the bank balance.

Not just looking at last month’s profit.

They were actually trying to determine where the business’s cash position was headed.

That stood out to me because there’s a big difference between knowing how much cash you have today and understanding how much cash you may have 30, 60, or 90 days from now.

A cash flow projection can help you prepare for payroll, taxes, upcoming expenses, equipment purchases, slower months, and even decisions about when it’s time to grow.

You don’t have to make it complicated, either. A simple projection can tell you a lot.

So let me ask the business owners out there:

Do you project your cash flow, or do you mainly watch your bank balance?

I’d really like to hear how other business owners handle this. šŸ‘‡

Just finished my 3-mile walk this morning, and what a sight! šŸŒ•šŸŒ…

Sometimes you have to slow down for a moment and appreciate what’s right in front of you. What a beautiful way to start the day.

3 miles done. āœ… Feeling accomplished and grateful. šŸ™šŸ¾

šŸ’° Profit Leaks: The Silent Killers of Your Bottom Line

Your business can generate strong revenue and still lose thousands of dollars each year through profit leaks you may not even notice.

In this video, I discuss common areas where profits can quietly slip away—including slow collections, unnecessary expenses, vendor costs, and payroll inefficiencies—and why business owners should focus on how much revenue they keep, not just how much they generate.

Are there profit leaks hiding in your business?

🦷 Dental Practice Owners — here’s a question worth asking:

Do you know which insurance plans are actually profitable for your practice?

A plan may bring plenty of patients through the door, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s helping your bottom line.

Look beyond patient volume. Consider:

• Contractual adjustments
• Reimbursement rates
• Chair time
• Staffing costs
• Collection delays
• Profitability by procedure

Sometimes being busy can hide what’s really happening financially.

Have you ever analyzed your practice’s profitability by insurance payer?

I’d be interested to hear how many dental practice owners are actually tracking this.

Is Your Business Using the Right Entity Structure?

Just because an LLC, S-Corp, or C-Corp made sense when you started your business doesn't mean it's still the best fit today.

As your business grows, your profitability, tax situation, and long-term goals can change. In this Facebook Live, I discuss some of the key differences between business entity types and why business owners should periodically review their structure.

ā–¶ļø Watch the video and ask yourself: If I were choosing my business entity today, would I make the same choice?
