She Inherited $3 Million — And Didn't Know How to Make It Last
A few months ago, I was referred to a 75-year-old woman with a $2.9 million investment portfolio.
But there was a problem — she didn't feel financially secure.
Her advisor had been pushing her to spend no more than $7,500 a month out of fear that she might eventually run out of money.
Think about that.
Nearly $3 million in inherited wealth — and still worried about spending it.
The problem wasn't how much she had accumulated.
The problem was knowing whether those assets could reliably support the lifestyle she wanted for the rest of her life.
That was the challenge she wanted me to solve.
Her primary objective was income.
She wanted $10,000 per month. (including her social security)
I suggested allocating $1.3 million to a fixed indexed annuity with a guaranteed income rider paying 8.7% — $9,425 per month, guaranteed for her lifetime.
The balance of her portfolio was invested according to her risk tolerance and time frame, providing additional money for growth, opportunities and emergencies.
Since we implemented the strategy in March, she has told me numerous times what a sense of relief it is to know she will never run out of income.
A significant portion of her money still has the opportunity to grow.
But even if it doesn't, she no longer has to worry about outliving her money.
She didn't need a bigger portfolio.
She needed a better plan for the portfolio she already had.
