Saving more is usually treated as the goal.

But at some point, it’s worth asking: What am I actually saving for?

Retiring earlier? Traveling more? Helping your kids? Having the freedom to work less? Simply feeling more secure?

The answer can change how you think about the decisions you’re making today.

A financial plan shouldn’t just help you accumulate money. It should help you figure out what you want that money to make possible.

Two people can have the same amount saved for retirement and be in two completely different financial positions.

One might have a pension. One might still have a mortgage. One may want to travel several times a year. The other may be happiest staying close to home. Their taxes, health care costs, families and timelines may look completely different.

That’s why “How much do I need to retire?” rarely has one universal answer.

The number matters. The life behind it matters more.

Ready to put your retirement picture into perspective? We’re here to help.

There’s a stretch of the year when everything seems to happen at once.

Property taxes. Insurance renewals. Holiday plans. Travel. Home projects you wanted finished before winter.

None of these expenses are necessarily a surprise. But when several land within a few months of each other, they can still put pressure on your cash flow.

A good financial plan should account for the predictable-but-not-monthly expenses, too.

When the kids leave home, the expenses don’t always disappear.

Sometimes, they just change addresses.

But this stage of life can still create an opportunity to look at your finances a little differently. What are you still paying for? Has your cash flow changed? Are the goals you set years ago still the goals you have today?

Our latest blog looks at the financial side of becoming an empty nester and why it can be a good time to revisit what you want your money to do next.

A little behind-the-scenes progress from our future home on Walnut Street.

Last week was all about what’s happening beneath the surface. Plumbing was run for the new suites, work continued on our future conference room, and power was trenched in so the conference table will be ready for plenty of conversations to come.
You can also start to see a new doorway being added for future tenants in the building.

It may look a little messy right now, but each week it’s starting to look more like the space we’ve been envisioning. More to come!

A lot of financial planning happens when you’re not in the room.

Reviewing accounts. Running projections. Looking at tax implications. Researching options. Following up on questions. Checking that the pieces of your financial life still fit together.

The meeting is where we talk through the work.

But it’s not the only time the work is happening.

At LincolnBridge, ongoing planning means continuing to pay attention between conversations, not simply picking things back up at your next appointment.

“I feel like I should know this already.”

We hear some version of that more often than you might think.

How much should I be saving?
What exactly is this account?
When can I realistically retire?
Am I invested the right way?
What happens to my money if something happens to me?

You don’t need to study before meeting with a financial planner. And there’s no financial vocabulary test at the door.

Bring the statements. Bring the questions. Bring the things you’re not quite sure how to ask.

Helping make sense of it is part of the job.

One question. Three perspectives.

One of the benefits of working with LincolnBridge is that there isn’t just one person thinking about your financial life.

Mike, John and Greg each bring different experience, expertise and perspective to the table. And sometimes the best answer comes from talking it through together.

You may have one primary advisor.

But you have a team behind them.

“Isn’t putting all my accounts with one advisor like putting all my eggs in one basket?”

It’s a fair question. And the answer comes down to an important distinction: Where your accounts are managed, where your assets are actually held and what you’re invested in are not necessarily the same thing.

Having accounts spread across several institutions doesn’t automatically make you more diversified. And consolidating accounts doesn’t automatically mean taking on more risk.

In our latest blog, we break down what actually happens when accounts are consolidated, the role of a custodian and the questions worth asking before you move anything.
