Social Security and SSI benefits will rise 3.6% for 2027.
The Social Security Administration announced the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) on October 14, 2026. Here's what it means:
• The 3.6% increase applies to nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries, starting with January 2027 payments.
• SSA says average retirement benefits will rise by about $75 a month.
• Higher payments for about 7.3 million people on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) start December 31, 2026.
• If you have a personal my Social Security account, you can view your COLA notice online starting in late November. If you don't have one, SSA says to create an account and enroll in paperless notices by November 18 to see it online. Otherwise, your notice arrives by mail in December.
If you're on Medicare, keep an eye out for your 2027 Medicare premium amount, which SSA says will be in your my Social Security Message Center starting in late November.
A COLA can affect your retirement income plan, taxes, and budget. If you have questions about how it fits into your situation, we're happy to talk it through.
