Most IRS collection problems don't start with a levy โ they start with a letter someone put in a drawer.
The IRS follows a fairly predictable notice sequence before it can seize wages or bank accounts. Knowing where you are on that ladder tells you how much time โ and how many options โ you still have.
๐ฌ CP14 โ your first balance-due notice. This is the cheapest point to resolve it: pay in full or set up a payment plan (IRC ยง6159, Form 9465).
๐ฌ CP501 / CP503 โ reminders. Meanwhile, failure-to-pay penalties and interest keep adding up (IRC ยง6651, IRC ยง6601).
โ ๏ธ CP504 โ Notice of Intent to Levy. The IRS can now take your state tax refund (IRC ยง6331(d)).
๐จ LT11 / Letter 1058 โ Final Notice. You generally have 30 days to request a Collection Due Process hearing (IRC ยง6330, Form 12153). Miss that window and you give up important appeal rights.
The good news: at every step there are still options โ installment agreements, penalty abatement, Currently Not Collectible status, or an Offer in Compromise (IRC ยง7122; IRS Pub. 594). They just get narrower the longer you wait.
If one of these letters is sitting on your counter, send me a DM or book a free consult. As an Enrolled Agent, I can speak with the IRS on your behalf โ so you don't have to.
