💸 Cash flow can make or break a growing trade business 💸

In our latest Cost Codes Show episode, Ryan Gilmore sits down with Robbie Reynolds, VP of Corporate Development at Billd, to talk through one of the biggest challenges subcontractors face: funding projects while waiting 60, 80, even 90 days to get paid.

They cover:

Why subs often end up acting as the bank for the job

How to think about your capital stack

Where credit lines, supplier terms, and early pay programs fit

Why cost of capital should be part of your planning and your bids

If you’re trying to grow without getting squeezed on cash, this is worth a watch.

We end our posts with our interview with Chris Jordan -Branch Principal of Falkbuilt San Diego.

How I got into Construction - I graduated from San Diego State with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Environmental Design. I began my career doing tenant improvement space planning and interior design for real estate developers and leasing agents. I was the liaison between the tenant (who wanted everything), the developer (who the tenant expected to pay for everything), the leasing agent (who wanted to bring the tenant wishes and the developers budget together to make a deal), the building department (whose timeline and code requirements took precedence over wishes and budget) and the general contractor who was expected to deliver the tenant improvement build out on time and within budget. I worked closely with the developer's designated general contractor during the tenant programming and space planning process to plan and price tenant improvement specifications. We were operating as a design/build consultant before the design/build term for this type of project delivery was coined. By 2005, 3D design and manufacturing technology was rapidly evolving including innovative programs and products to provide for the off-site manufacturing of construction components. I fell in love with the design technology that allowed a designer to build virtually and the manufacturer to deliver precisely engineered construction components to the field for the build. As a result, over the years our design firm morphed into a design/build off-site manufactured construction company - Falkbuilt San Diego.

What I love most - Seeing an idea become a plan and then a reality. To create something - to BUILD something is amazing.

Favorite accomplishments - I have been in business for 40 years. That is a long time! I have had some amazing projects and awards I am proud of, but in the end, my greatest delight is in the relationships I have had the opportunity to develop and the teams I have had the honor to coach.

Advice to other women - Don't think you have to act like a man to be relevant in the construction world. Just be a creative, intuitive, intelligent, hard-working, responsible construction team member.

Another day, another highlight post!

Today we are spotlighting Keanna Rocha, Operations Manager at C. Hunter Electrical. Check out her interview below:

How did you get into construction?

I got into construction after finishing my business degree, and I’ve been working alongside my dad, who owns the company (photo attached), for the past six years. I started out handling more of the administrative side of things, and over time I’ve grown into a management role.

Now, I oversee company operations, but my work goes beyond the day-to-day. I’m involved in strategic decisions and handle a lot of the initiatives that help the business grow. I wear a lot of hats, from sales, some finance, marketing, projects, HR, and safety…but what really drives me is helping the company grow and succeed.

❓What do you like most about your job/company❓

I genuinely love what I do…..the people, the business, and the construction industry as a whole.

I enjoy being creative and strategic to solve problems, and I love leading and building our team.

Working alongside my dad has been incredible. He’s taught me so much, and I’ve gained years of wisdom & knowledge from the countless meetings and experiences we’ve shared over the years.

❓What’s your favorite project or work accomplishment❓

My latest accomplishment was leading the migration from Sage 300 CRE to QuickBooks Online and Knowify. It was exciting to play a key role in this transition. We’ve been using Knowify since September, and the team is loving it!

❓What advice would you give to other women in the field or looking to break in❓

Walk into every job site and room like you belong there…even if you’re the only woman. Carry yourself with confidence and don’t let being in a male-dominated industry intimidate you. Remember to have fun along the way!

Continuing with - our next shoutout goes to Sully Slager - an engineer/project analyst at EME Mechanical, and an absolute ROCKSTAR.

We asked Sully some questions about her time in the field - read her answers below:

"I got into construction when the owner of EME, whom I have known since he is ten years-old, and I had a conversation at his mother's funeral. Two weeks later he started calling me regularly, in New Jersey, asking me to come to Utah and help run his company. Frankly I thought he was kidding. Then he brought me to Utah to check it out and the beauty of Utah pulled me in. Before moving to Utah my work history included things like managing an Irish Pub and managing a medical device distributorship. As it turns out, I loved learning about this industry and jumped in with both feet and have learned, and keep learning as much as possible. Construction is fascinating and is very much underappreciated, and taken for granted by the people who occupy the structures that are built. Nobody sits in their office and appreciates the men and women who labored and sweated so that they can be comfortable in their environment.

My job has changed a dozen times since I came to Utah almost four years ago. From procurement to assisting the director of operations (for whom I found Knowify!) to A/P, A/R, HR and now project engineering. I love it all. At the moment I am learning Bluebeam to assist with plumbing fixture takeoffs which has me learning to read plans too! I am proud to be among the tradesmen.

My greatest accomplishment was finding and implementing Knowify, and continually helping the team learn more about it. This is not pandering. Ownership has said this to me many times. Frankly, EME would not have grown as much as it has without it. My next accomplishment goal is to be an integral part of individual projects to maximize profitability.

Advice to other women in any area would be to take risks, step out of their comfort zones and into the unknown of any endeavor that excites them whether they must "fly solo" or have partnerships. We get only one life and there are limitless choices. Experience as much as possible and don't let anyone else's negativity stop them from working hard and becoming successful in their endeavors. Work hard, learn from setbacks, keep your eye on the prize, and GO FOR IT! "

It's 2026, and we are spotlighting some of the incredible women who are crushing it in the construction space.

Each day we will feature a different Knowify customer, along with some of their takes on the space, and photos from the field.

We kick it off with Heidi Rich, Chief Financial Officer, at Miller's Coastline Construction:

❓How did you get into construction❓

I transitioned from engineering into construction primarily to work alongside my family — not because I was specifically pursuing the industry itself. What I discovered, though, is that construction has been a far better fit for me. The work is dynamic and tangible. I enjoy solving real, concrete problems with clear, definable solutions — and construction provides endless opportunities for that. I get to do work I genuinely enjoy, alongside people I care about, building something meaningful together.

❓What is your favorite part of working in the space❓

What I like most is the challenge. No two days are the same. Construction forces you to think critically, communicate clearly, and solve problems quickly. I also love developing people — helping team members grow, take ownership, and succeed. When the team wins, we all win.

❓What’s your favorite project or work accomplishment❓

One of my favorite accomplishments isn’t just a single project — it’s building systems that improve how we operate. Creating clarity around estimating, labor tracking, and accountability has made a huge difference in our performance and profitability. Seeing projects run smoother because of structure and discipline is incredibly rewarding.

❓What advice would you give to other women in the field or looking to break in❓

Construction rewards competence, consistency, and confidence — not perfection. Learn the numbers, understand the field, and speak up. You don’t have to change who you are to succeed here. Be steady, be solution-focused, and earn respect through performance.

If you're a trade contractor trying to manage job costs in QuickBooks, you've probably hit the wall.

AIA billing? Manual workaround.
WIP reports? Good luck.
Connecting budgets to commitments? Not happening.

In our latest podcast episode, Scott Franchini walks through exactly how contractors are solving this:

1. Job setup & contract control – Lock in the details before work starts

2. Budget → Commitment → Schedule of Values – A connected workflow that actually makes sense

3. AIA billing generation – Built from your schedule of values, not recreated from scratch

4. Job cost reports & WIP – Real-time visibility without the spreadsheet gymnastics

5. Service orders for field work – A lean approach to job costing without the complexity

The key insight? You don't need to abandon QuickBooks. You layer the right tools on top of it.

For contractors with both project and service work, this means one portal for time, expenses, and billing.
