Individual e-File will be Down for IRS Extended Maintenance Period
The last full day to e-file individual returns (federal and state) before the IRS extended maintenance period is November 29th. The maintenance period begins at 10 a.m. EST on November 30th.
Each year, the IRS temporarily shuts down e-file for an extended maintenance period in order to prepare for the upcoming filing season. This year, the IRS will stop receiving e-filed individual (1040) income tax returns after 10 a.m. EST on Wednesday, November 30. Transmissions for 2014 and 2015 returns will resume sometime in January 2017, or in accordance with the start-up of the filing season for 2016 returns. 2013 returns can no longer be e-filed after this shutdown. The IRS supports only three years at a time.
Drake will not accept individual federal or state transmissions from 9:55 a.m. EST on Wednesday, November 30 until January 2, 2017. Instead, we will issue “B” (bad transmission) reject acknowledgments. If you must file a 2014 or 2015 individual return during this downtime, we recommend that you paper-file it. Starting on January 2, 2017, we will begin accepting e-file transmissions for 2014, 2015, and 2016 individual returns. We will hold these returns until the IRS goes live again in January. At this time, the IRS has not set an official start date.
Business Returns
At this time, we do not have dates for when the shutdown period will occur for business returns. We will forward that information to you as soon as it becomes available.
