Have You Considered What Happens to Your Business Ownership Interest When Circumstances Change? 🏢

For closely held and family-owned businesses, a buy-sell agreement can play an important role in protecting ownership interests and preparing for the unexpected.

From establishing a fair valuation to helping maintain family control and providing liquidity for an owner's estate, these agreements offer benefits that extend beyond business succession.

Regularly reviewing your agreement can help ensure it continues to reflect your business's needs and your estate planning goals.

With the 2026 midterm elections approaching, attention is turning to what potential shifts in Washington could mean for financial markets.

In our latest Economic & Market Update, we look at the historical relationship between midterm elections and market performance, the unusually competitive landscape in the House and Senate, and why investors may be better served by focusing on long-term objectives rather than political outcomes.

History shows that election years can bring uncertainty, but the year following midterms has often been favorable for stocks. Above all, time in the market has historically mattered more than which party controls Congress.

Could a qualified personal residence trust help reduce future estate tax exposure?

A QPRT allows you to transfer a primary or secondary residence to an irrevocable trust while retaining the right to live in or use the home for a specified number of years. If you survive the trust term, future appreciation above the applicable IRS rate may pass to beneficiaries with reduced gift and estate tax consequences.

Here’s what to know:

âś… A QPRT can hold a primary residence or secondary residence
âś… You retain the right to use the home during the trust term
âś… The transfer of the remainder interest is generally treated as a taxable gift
âś… If you die before the term ends, the home is generally included in your taxable estate
âś… Beneficiaries generally do not receive a step-up in basis when the QPRT term ends successfully

A QPRT can provide meaningful estate planning benefits, but the potential estate tax savings should be weighed against the strategy’s risks and income tax consequences. Learn more at lptrust.com.

How should you file your federal income tax return after the death of a spouse?

A surviving spouse can generally file a joint return with the deceased spouse for the year of death, but filing jointly may not always produce the best result. Income, deductions, potential tax liabilities and other circumstances can all affect the decision.

Here’s what to know:

âś… A final income tax return must be filed for the deceased spouse
âś… A surviving spouse may generally file jointly for the year of death
âś… Filing jointly may provide access to more favorable tax brackets, deductions and credits
âś… Filing separately may make sense in certain financial or tax situations
âś… A surviving spouse with a dependent child may qualify for qualifying surviving spouse status for the following two tax years

There are many factors to consider when deciding how to file after the death of a spouse. Learn more at lptrust.com.

Could a 530A account become part of your family’s gifting strategy?

Also known as “Trump accounts,” these new custodial, tax-advantaged accounts allow contributions for eligible children under age 18. Earnings grow tax-deferred, and certain children born from 2025 through 2028 may also qualify for a one-time $1,000 government contribution.

Recent IRS guidance provides additional clarity for individuals contributing to these accounts. If specific requirements are met, contributions may qualify for the annual gift tax exclusion without requiring a gift tax return. If the requirements aren’t met, different gift tax reporting rules may apply.

Understanding how these accounts fit alongside your other gifts can be an important part of thoughtful tax and estate planning. Learn more at lptrust.com.

Q2 2026 delivered one of the strongest earnings seasons in recent history, with record margins, broad-based earnings growth and the fastest revenue growth in nearly five years. Even more notable, the strength extended well beyond the market’s largest companies.

In our latest Economic & Market Update, we take a closer look at what drove the quarter’s results, why corporate earnings continue to matter over the long term and what the numbers may be telling investors about the broader market.
