You don't get 30 good years in retirement.

Let's say retirement age is 65

You might have the ability to travel and live how you want until your late 70s

After that life tends to slow down.

You travel less and do less physical activities.

Somewhere by the mid 80s you might not want to go far from home.

It's often said you only get 12 good years

If you can retire think about doing it earlier rather than later

One more year of work can be a trap.

Make a plan know your numbers and safety net you have in place.

Retire and enjoy what you've built.

Quick caveat I have clients in their 80s that still hike and cross country ski so also don't live thinking you can't extend your good years with good habits.

This is scary.

I know scams have been around for ages even AI ones.

But the fact that AI can mimic voices now and it's not hard to do because I've looked it up and within 10 minutes I figured out how to do it.

The main thing to keep you and your family safe is to have a password for major events involving money or other.

If they don't have the password then they aren't really the person you think they are on the other end period end of story.

I've seen a lot of financial scams over the years and this video is old. All the more reason to create a plan to protect yourself today.

What I do in addition to passwords is not trust the phone number calling me isn't spoofed (or faked to look like the number and name on the screen), I would hang up and call the number in my phone and someone close to that person that may have been with them to verify whatever claim - this is only in major situations.

The main thing is to verify anything through another source be it bank or personal.

I would have a password or code word to protect from difficult situations.

Simple easy processes in place can mean serious protection and removing these worries from your life in large part.

Knowing this is out there isn't to worry anyone it's so you're not caught off guard and have to make a decision in a moment of crisis.

"A Roth is Always Best" is Wrong - Here's what you shouldn't get wrong

or you should always convert.

1. When you're in a higher tax bracket now vs. lower in retirement

2. Conversions spike your IRMAA (think your Medicare costs) unnecessarily

3. If the plan is to have your heirs inherit consider if their in a lower tax bracket to begin with.

4. Converting because Roth is "better" - If you convert at the highest tax bracket and retire into the highest tax bracket it's likely you'll end up in a similar boat you just did more work to get there.

5. Converting in a state that taxes income when you were planning to move to a state that doesn't in the near future. Waiting could be beneficial here.

Roth conversions are often best after you're done working/sold the business before RMDs being and your income is low.

Better to pay the tax from cash rather than the conversion.

Just make sure to make a plan and talk with your tax advisor.

Not advice just a thought.

You can't just buy the S&P and leave it be.

Now i'm not saying that you have to be overly complex when you invest.

Actually simpler is often best in my mind.

Here's what I am saying

The S&P 500 is one of many indexes.

There was a span of 10 years called the lost decade where the S&P 500 was actually negative for that ten year span when you average out the yearly return.

So don't focus on one index like you shouldn't focus everything on one or a few stocks.

Understand your risk tolerance

Then create a diversified portfolio with stock and bond indexes to match the risk/return that makes sense for you

Make $500,000 and still broke

How can this happen?

That's an incredible amount of money and most people do well on far less

But what happens in these types of scenarios are all too similar (baring things like health issues or serious unavoidable situations)

Buy too big a house

Buy a boat

Maybe a few luxury cars

Don't review spending

Forget about taxes

Thinking the money will always come in

It's unfortunate to see some people with all the capabilities of building something for their family squander it on expensive stuff

But you cant out earn bad habits

To counter this

- Track your spending once a month

- Set automatic saving and investing transfers

- Make a plan

- Move towards the goals that really matter not the stuff you'll be bored of in a few months anyway.

Worried about AI watch this.

I've seen a lot of doom and gloom around AI and the future.

Now maybe we should be concerned or maybe it's just company owners hyping up their product.

Will it be a useful tool where the worry is overblown like the radio and TV situations of the past?

What we do know is that we have no control over what will happen.

We can only control how we respond.

In this case understanding the tech is helpful for one.

Current benefits and in the case of the video limitations.

It seems we can't trust the tech to give us an honest representation of its up to date capabilities and unless you program it to argue with you it will be far too positive in how it responds to you.

So for now it seems useful for work or research but a human is only enhanced by it not replaced.

Either way check this video out for some levity on the topic and maybe a little peace of mind.

"I can't take it anymore I just want to retire"

This seems to be the sentiment more and more these days. People just want to retire.

They can't stand the nonsense anymore.

WFH - not available because we have to "collaborate" in yet another meeting that could have been an email and go back to work after with one less hour in the day.

If you aren't at that point yet you'll be surprised how quickly it can happen.

Start building the life you want to live today so that you have options when you hit that point.

Live abroad for 2 months in retirement?

You have time in retirement.

If you make a budget it's more possible than ever to live abroad instead of just planning a week or two in your country of choice.

Use Vrbo to price out living abroad for a bit. Could be a month or two depending on your budget but its more affordable than you might think.

This thought can also apply to renting an RV and exploring the US - national parks are a great idea here as well.

The point is you can get a little creative and acutally live and relax where you've always wanted to explore.
