Coronavirus Tax Relief for Employers – Hooray! Today the IRS announced payroll tax credit for employers and self-employed individuals who provide paid family, sick or medical leave for employees who miss work for Coronavirus reasons through year-end. The bill provides tax credits that equal 100% of qualified family leave wages paid for small businesses where employees are unable to work to take care of children under 18 years old.

The credit for small businesses (fewer than 500 employees) is up to 80 hours paid sick time though year-end for quarantined or self-quarantined employees having COVID-19, or because the employee is caring from children whose school has been closed due to precautions. Employers with less than 50 employees can be exempted from this requirement.

The credit is generally available up to $511 in wages (quarantined, self-quarantined or who have COVID-19) per individual, or up to $2,100 for other workers, per day, the employee receives qualified sick leave pay, up to 10 days per calendar quarter, with a maximum credit of $10,000 per employee.

Self-employed individuals are also provided with a refundable credit against income tax for qualified sick leave equivalent amounts.
