Diana Miret - Business Profit Coach

Diana Miret - Business Profit Coach Business owners often don’t fully understand their financial statements, making it difficult to make informed decisions.

They may not know whether they are truly profitable, what their margins are, or how to optimize costs.

Net profit is not something you discover at year-end. It is something you design for.

Pricing, gross margin, payroll, overhead, financing, and owner decisions all shape net profit. A target profit percentage gives the organization a destination. Without a target, 'whatever is left' becomes the strategy.

Sometimes the fastest path to more revenue is not more customers.

Average transaction value is one of the simplest revenue drivers to overlook. Bundling, upsells, pricing, service mix, and customer education can increase the economics of the customers you already serve. Before spending more to acquire demand, understand the value of each transaction.

Profitable on paper is not the same as financially secure.

A company can report net income and still struggle to make payroll. That is why I look at profit and cash together. Profit tells us whether the economic model works. Cash tells us whether the business can survive the timing of that model.

After 35 years inside real businesses, I know this: pricing is not a guess, and it is not determined by what competitors charge. It has to support the actual economics of your business.

Most business owners price for the work.

But your price has to cover far more than your time and direct costs.

It needs to cover:

1. Direct costs
2. Team payroll
3. Overhead
4. Owner pay
5. Taxes and reserves
6. Profit

Most pricing misses at least three of these.

That’s why revenue can look strong while cash feels tight: and why a business can be “profitable” on paper while the owner is still underpaid.

There’s another problem: when personal and business expenses get mixed together, your numbers stop telling the truth. Your pricing becomes guesswork.

The fix is calculating your true hourly cost using real business numbers: not assumptions, industry averages, or what competitors charge.

I’ll walk through that calculation live, using real examples and a practical worksheet, inside my 60-minute masterclass:

Owner pay should not be whatever happens to be left in the bank account.

Owners need a deliberate structure for compensation, distributions, taxes, reinvestment, and reserves. The goal is not to extract every available dollar - or to perpetually underpay the owner. The goal is a business that can compensate ownership appropriately while remaining financially strong.

Your price may be wrong: but not because you’re charging too much.

And not because you lack confidence, value, or work ethic.

The problem is usually structural.

Most owners set prices based on:

• What competitors charge
• What the market seems to accept
• What feels comfortable for customers
• What they think they can reasonably ask

Very few calculate what their price actually needs to cover:

Payroll.
Overhead.
Owner pay.
Taxes.
Profit.
Cash reserves.

When those costs are not built into the price, every sale can create activity without creating enough financial strength.

Revenue goes up, but cash stays tight. The owner works harder, while the business quietly absorbs the gap.

That gap can cost thousands every month.

The issue isn’t personal. It’s structural.

Your pricing should be designed to support the business you are building: not copied from a competitor or chosen from a feeling.

If your P&L says you made money but your bank account disagrees, both may be telling the truth.

Profit and cash are related, but they are not the same thing. Debt payments, inventory, owner distributions, accounts receivable, capital purchases, and timing can all consume cash without appearing as operating expenses on the P&L. A CFO helps connect the P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow so the owner can finally answer: Where did the money go?

46% of business owners recently raised their prices.

But most still can’t answer one critical question:

What does your price actually need to cover?

If you set prices based on competitors, intuition, or what “feels right,” you may be charging more without creating more profit.

Your price needs to account for:

• The cost of delivering your product or service
• Payroll and operating expenses
• Overhead and taxes
• Your compensation as the owner
• The profit your business is supposed to produce

Raising prices without understanding your true cost structure is not strategy.

It’s guesswork.

And guesswork gets expensive as your business grows.

On Monday, September 14, I’m hosting a live 60-minute pricing masterclass: Why Your Pricing Is Wrong (And You May Not Even Know It).

You’ll work through real business examples, calculate your true pricing baseline, and leave with a clear next step.

Your bank balance is a snapshot. It is not a financial operating system.

A healthy bank balance can make a bad month look safe - and a temporarily low balance can make a healthy business feel broken. The better questions are: What cash is already committed? What is coming in? What is going out? What reserve do we need? What decisions are coming next? Financial confidence comes from visibility and structure, not from refreshing the bank account.
