- Indigenous Kumeyaay people inhabited the area for 10,000 years
- Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo became the first European to set foot on the West Coast in 1542
- Spanish colonization began in 1769 with the establishment of Mission San Diego de Alcala
- The Old Point Loma Lighthouse was built in 1855
- The monument was established in 1913 to commemorate Cabrillo's voyage
- Today, it's a popular tourist destination managed by the National Park Service.
