Saw a guru ad this week claiming certifications hurt your value. That's backwards.

A certificate doesn't tell you someone's good at the work. It tells you they bothered to learn it. You can get a medical degree — that doesn't mean you're a good doctor. But it does mean you put in the time and effort to get it. That's where the early vetting and early trust comes in. After that, it's the work they do that builds the rest.

So when you're hiring anyone — a bookkeeper, a plumber, a mechanic — read credentials that way. The badge earns the first look, not blind trust. Ask what they've actually done. The certificate opens the door. Their work decides whether you keep them around.

Here's the receipt habit that saves business owners hours every year.

When you buy something for the business, take a photo of the receipt right then — in the parking lot, before it hits the dashboard graveyard. Name it date-vendor, like 10-19-25-office-depot. Drop it in one folder. That's it.

Why it works: a faded paper receipt is an IRS fight waiting to happen, and hunting through a glovebox in April is how catch-up cleanups start. A dated photo settles "what was this?" in five seconds, twelve months later. Your future self — or whoever does your books — will be grateful.

Five seconds now beats five hours later. Every single time.

Here's a number most small businesses never run: what messy books actually cost vs. what fixing them costs.

On the chaos side — a year of shoebox receipts, missed deductions you can't document, and your CPA billing you extra just to sort it all out before taxes can even happen. Nobody sends you an invoice labeled 'chaos.' It just quietly eats money.

On the fixing side — my one-time cleanup starts at $399. Monthly bookkeeping from $300. That's the whole pitch: it's usually cheaper than the mess.

I learned this trade from scratch after 21 years turning wrenches at Boeing — no finance degree. So when I say clean books are cheaper than chaos, it's not a sales line. I've been the guy in the mess.

I'm Jason — I untangle messy books for a living. Message me here or at lehawkbookkeeping.com, and I'll give you a straight answer on what yours actually needs.

Here's something nobody tells you when you start a business: you're legally required to keep books. Not "nice to have" — required. If the IRS ever comes knocking, "I didn't know" isn't a defense.

But the real moment comes earlier. Revenue's coming in, things feel good — and then someone asks "so are you actually making money?" and you realize you can't answer. That's the moment you need a bookkeeper. Not when you're drowning. Before.

Clean books mean three things: you know your numbers, tax season isn't a panic attack, and you make decisions with data instead of gut feelings.

Episode 1

10/12/2026

Hey all — I'm Jason, I run a small bookkeeping business up in Lake Stevens. Like everyone here, I'm trying to get my name out without a big ad budget, so I made something a little different: a short animated series where a knight takes on the "dragons" that bury small businesses — starting with the shoebox of receipts and the tax mess.
This is episode one. Figured if I'm going to advertise, I might as well make it fun to watch. If your books are your dragon, that's literally what I do for a living — happy to chat. Either way, hope it gives you a laugh.

The call came from a village drowning in receipts.

Shoeboxes of them. Spreadsheets unopened since spring. Owners working late just to figure out where the money went — and a dragon made of tax forms circling overhead.

Every business owner has a dragon. Yours is the books.

I'm Jason — I take these quests for a living. Catch-up and cleanup starting at $399, monthly bookkeeping from $300. Remote, QuickBooks Online, Washington-based, zero judgment about the shoebox.

The quest has begun. Next episode: the Tax Man.

October is when smart business owners start closing out the year — not December 31st in a panic.

Three things to do this month:
1. Reconcile September now, while the receipts still make sense.
2. Chase down any missing invoices — clients pay faster before the holidays.
3. Look at your profit so far and talk to your tax person BEFORE year-end, when there is still time to act.

Future you, the one not crying on New Year's Eve, says thanks.
