The number Shopify puts in your bank account is not your revenue.
Every payout already had card fees, refunds, and holds pulled out. At 2.9 percent plus 30 cents a transaction, a $10,000 month with 200 orders loses about $350 to fees before the money lands. Book the deposit as sales and you understate revenue and hide your fees in one line.
The fix: book gross sales, then fees and refunds separately, so your margin is visible.

Smoky Mountain CPAs
Two-CPA firm in Knoxville. Shopify, retail, contractors.
We keep your books clean and CPA-reviewed, run a Profit First cash system that pays you first, and handle your
taxes all year so year-end is a review, not a scramble.
If you spend everything Shopify deposits, April is going to hurt.
Here's the number we give clients: 15 percent of every deposit goes into a separate tax account the day it lands. On a $10,000 month, that's $1,500 set aside before you can spend it. When the quarterly estimate comes due, the money is just sitting there. No scramble, no credit card.
Your percentage might differ. The separate account and the schedule are what matter.

Your accountant is not checking your books. And it’s costing you money.
A tax preparer files a return from whatever you hand them. They don’t audit your books or hunt for the deductions you missed. That’s the bookkeeper’s job, and if that’s you, it’s on you.
Get your books checked before they ever reach your tax preparer. Especially if you’re a newer business.
We’re two CPAs, and we don’t do taxes. We make sure the books your tax preparer works from are actually right.

Clear payment terms matter.
If your invoices are vague, payments can slow down fast. Make sure your due dates, fees, and payment options are easy to understand from the start.
Professional invoicing helps protect your time, your cash flow, and your business.
