Required minimum distributions are not optional.

What if you don't need the money?

😡 Too bad.

Those dollars went in pretax and the IRS wants a chance at collecting tax on the way out.

A QCD can send that same dollar to charity from the IRA. If done in the right order, the QCD can satisfy the RMD- it does not land on the 1040 the way a normal withdrawal does.

The check has to leave the IRA. Not your checking account after you already took the distribution.

If the IRA is the tax problem and giving is already in the plan, consider running the RMD through the charity first.

The step-up is one of the cleanest tax features a family gets. It is also one of the most misunderstood.
At death, appreciated assets in a taxable account can reset to fair market value. Heirs can sell and owe little or no gain on the growth that happened during your life.

Not every account works like this.

Pretax IRAs and 401(k)s do not get a step-up on the deferred income. The kids would still have ordinary income as the money comes out.

Joint title can cut the step-up on the assets that would have qualified. Adding a child to the brokerage or the house is a gift of ownership now. You may have just given away the reset on that share.

If the family is counting on a clean sale after the first death, look at how the account is titled before you count the tax.

Which accounts did you assume would reset?

It is rarely a good idea to name the estate as the IRA beneficiary.

That puts the will in charge of an account the beneficiary form is supposed to run.

Naming the estate pulls the IRA into probate.
A named spouse, a named child, or a trust built for the IRA does not. Don't forget to add the contingents.

Leave the estate off the line.

Most people use the HSA like a flexible spending account.

That wastes the only triple-tax account they will ever get.

Contribution can come off taxable income.
Growth is not taxed.
Qualified medical withdrawals are not taxed.

No other common account does all three.

If cash flow allows:
>Max it.
>Invest it.
>Pay routine care from a taxable account.

Save the receipts so you can reimburse those expenses later.

After 65 you can take money for anything without the extra penalty. You still pay ordinary income if it is not a qualified medical expense making it a backup IRA, not a secret tax-free ATM.

This is not a reason to skip care. It is a reason to stop emptying the one account that can fund health costs in retirement without lighting up the tax return.

Are you using the HSA as a spending account, or as part of the core?

The default advice when you leave a company is to roll the 401(k) to an IRA.

Sometimes that is right, but it is not automatic.

Three things get lost when the whole balance moves in one instruction:

Company stock. (NUA) Net unrealized appreciation only works if the shares come out of the plan the right way. Roll them into an IRA and that treatment is gone.

Roth 401(k) dollars. Those belong in a Roth IRA, not a traditional rollover.

After-tax basis. Mix it with pre-tax money and you spend years untangling a return that should have been simple.

Before the transfer:

What is company stock versus the rest.
What is Roth versus pre-tax versus after-tax.
Whether the new account can hold each piece separately.

The plan held more than one kind of dollar. The rollover should too.

Have you looked at the 401(k) in pieces, or only at the total?

When you coach youth sports, the hardest kids to mentor are not the ones who lack skill.
It is usually harder to coach the ones who were handed starter minutes, gear, and praise they did not earn.
Many of those kids never use the talent because they never had to.

Family wealth can work similarly.

A $5M unrestricted check does not automatically create a steward.

It often creates a waiting period where they organize their life around the inheritance instead of around their own work.

The job is not to cut the kids off.

It is to give them a role before they get the capital.

Structure is the easy part.

Responsibility has to come first.

Most families who give in retirement write the check from a taxable account or from cash they just pulled out of the IRA.

Don't do that if you are 70½ or older!

A qualified charitable distribution is a direct transfer from the IRA to a public charity.
👉It can count toward the RMD.
👉It is excluded from income.
👉It is not an itemized deduction.
👉You get the benefit even if you take the standard deduction.

2026 limit: $111,000 per person. Each spouse with an IRA can do their own.

What it is not:

a gift to a DAF, a private foundation, or a check you deposit first. The custodian has to send it to the charity.

If the RMD is coming out anyway, and the church or school is getting a check anyway, using cash first manufactures a tax bill you did not need.

The giving did not change.

The way it got there did.

Are you giving from the IRA, or from money you already paid tax to withdraw?
