If you owe certain debts, the IRS may apply your federal tax refund toward those balances before issuing any remaining funds to you. This process is called a refund offset.

When an offset occurs, the IRS deducts the amount owed and sends you the remaining balance, if applicable. Please note that authorized tax preparation fees are still deducted as agreed.

If your refund is reduced, it is due to outstanding obligations reported to the IRS — not because your tax preparer withheld funds.

To check whether your refund may be subject to an offset, you can contact the Treasury Offset Program at 1-800-304-3107, or your tax preparer can assist you in verifying this information.
