💡 Tax Tip of the Day:

W-2 vs. 1099 — Know the Difference!

Getting paid for work doesn’t mean everyone is taxed the same way. 👀

📄 W-2 Employee: Your employer generally withholds federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare from your paycheck.

📄 1099 Contractor: Taxes usually are not withheld for you. You’re responsible for reporting your income and may owe both income tax and self-employment tax.

That 1099 money might look real good when it hits your account 😂… but remember, Uncle Sam may still be waiting on his part!

💡 TAX TIP OF THE DAY:

THE STANDARD DEDUCTION

You don’t necessarily pay taxes on every dollar you earn! 👀

The standard deduction reduces the amount of your income that is actually subject to federal income tax. (IRS)

For example, if your income is $60,000 and you qualify for a $15,750 standard deduction, that deduction can reduce your taxable income to $44,250 before other applicable deductions are considered.

For 2025 tax returns (the returns filed during the 2026 filing season), the standard deduction is:
💰 Single/MFS: $15,750
💰 Head of Household: $23,625
💰 Married Filing Jointly: $31,500 (IRS)

And remember: a deduction reduces taxable income—it is NOT the same thing as a tax credit that reduces your tax bill dollar-for-dollar.

💡 TAX TIP OF THE DAY:

Who Actually Counts as a Dependent?

Just because you help take care of someone doesn’t automatically mean you can claim them on your tax return! 👀

For tax purposes, a dependent generally falls into one of two categories: Qualifying Child or Qualifying Relative.

A qualifying child usually must meet IRS rules involving:
✨ Relationship
✨ Age
✨ Where they lived during the year
✨ How much of their own support they provided
✨ Whether someone else can claim them

And don’t let the word “relative” fool you—a qualifying relative doesn’t always have to be related to you! But there are still rules involving income, support, relationship/household, and whether they qualify as someone else’s dependent.

📌 The big takeaway: Paying a bill here and there or letting somebody stay with you doesn’t automatically give you the right to claim them.

Dependents can affect filing status and eligibility for certain tax credits, so getting it wrong can mean delayed refunds, denied credits, amended returns, or money owed back to the IRS.

💡 TAX TIP OF THE DAY:

CLAIMING “EXEMPT” IS NOT A TAX STRATEGY! 💰

Let’s clear this up because tax season is coming and your tax preparer does NOT want to be the bearer of bad news. 😩😂

Claiming EXEMPT on your W-4 means your employer generally will NOT withhold federal income tax from your paycheck. It does NOT mean you magically don’t owe taxes.

So who can actually claim exempt? 👀

Generally, you must meet BOTH requirements:

✅ You had NO federal income tax liability last year
AND
✅ You expect to have NO federal income tax liability this year.

That means simply wanting a bigger paycheck, having children, normally receiving a refund, or being a student does NOT automatically make you exempt.

🚨 And here’s where people get themselves in trouble…

If you claim exempt when you don’t qualify, you could get to tax season and discover that:

💸 You owe the IRS instead of receiving the refund you expected.
💸 You may be subject to an underpayment penalty.
💸 The IRS can review your withholding and potentially require your employer to withhold taxes under a “lock-in” letter.
💸 Knowingly providing false information on a W-4 can carry additional penalties.

And YES… you still have to file a tax return when required. Claiming exempt does not make your income tax liability disappear. 😭

📌 BOTTOM LINE:
That extra money hitting your paycheck every two weeks might feel GOOD right now… but if you weren’t actually eligible to claim exempt, Tina TheTaxLady may have some news you don’t wanna hear. 😂

Before changing your W-4 to exempt, talk to your tax preparer. Bigger checks now can mean a bigger TAX BILL later.

💰 TAX TIP OF THE DAY:

HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD EDITION

“I pay all the bills, so I’m Head of Household.”
Ehhhh… not necessarily. 😬

To generally qualify for Head of Household, you must:

💛 Be unmarried or considered unmarried on the last day of the year.
🏠 Pay more than half the cost of keeping up your home for the year.
👩🏾‍👧🏾 Have a qualifying person who meets the IRS requirements—usually living with you for more than half the year (with some exceptions).

💡 Tax Tip: Being the person whose name is on the lease, being the “head” of your family, or simply paying your own bills doesn’t automatically qualify you for HOH.

And no ma’am… everybody in the house cannot be Head of Household just because everybody contributes to the bills. 😂

Your filing status is based on IRS requirements—not household votes!

💡 TAX TIP OF THE DAY

Don’t confuse a tax extension with an extension to PAY! 👀

Filing an extension gives you more time to file your tax return — but it does NOT automatically give you more time to pay taxes you owe.

If you expect to owe, you should estimate and pay as much as possible by the original tax deadline to help reduce potential penalties and interest.

📌 More time to FILE ≠ more time to PAY.

💡TAX TIP OF THE DAY:

DO YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TAX CREDIT & A TAX DEDUCTION? 👀

They both can help lower your taxes… but they do NOT work the same way.

📉 A TAX DEDUCTION reduces the amount of your income that is subject to tax.

For example:
You made $50,000 and have a $5,000 deduction.
That does NOT mean you saved $5,000 in taxes. It means your taxable income may be reduced to $45,000.

💰 A TAX CREDIT reduces your actual tax bill.

If you owe $3,000 in taxes and qualify for a $2,000 tax credit, that credit could reduce your tax bill to $1,000.

Easy way to remember it:

👉🏾 Deduction = reduces the income being taxed
👉🏾 Credit = reduces the tax itself

And here’s another important piece: Some tax credits are refundable, some are nonrefundable, and some are partially refundable — which can make a BIG difference when your return is prepared.

Knowing the difference helps you better understand what’s actually happening on your tax return instead of just asking…

“Sooooo, how much am I getting back?” 🤣💰

Education is part of the service. 💙💛

💡 TAX TIP OF THE DAY: A REFUND ISN’T “FREE MONEY.”

Getting a big tax refund can feel like a win 🙌🏾💰 but do you know what a refund actually means?

For many taxpayers, your refund is simply money you overpaid throughout the year being returned to you.

That’s why I tell my clients: Don’t just focus on “How much am I getting back?”

Ask:

👉🏾 Am I having the right amount withheld from my checks?
👉🏾 Did anything change this year that could affect my taxes?
👉🏾 Am I taking advantage of the credits and deductions I actually qualify for?
👉🏾 If I’m self-employed, am I keeping up with my income and expenses before tax season?

Good tax planning happens BEFORE January. 📆

Tax season may have a deadline, but tax preparation is year round.
