🗣CREDIT CARDS AREN’T BAD. The misuse of them is.
I had no idea in 2006 that paying off a credit card and then, closing the card out voluntarily was a score killer 😩 Chile, I paid off that $3000 balance and closed a great credit card with Bank of America like it was the best thing to do! …. And older folks applauded that as “paying off debt”. We all were trippin, OKAY! 😂 Yes, I needed to pay down my balance, but closing the card was a HUGE MISTAKE! 🙅🏾♀️
Listen, when it comes to your personal credit - credit utilization is 30% of your credit score.
📌 If you don’t have any credit cards (out of fear, etc), you’re leaving 165 scoreable points on the table.
📌 You need to have at least 3 revolving accounts and 2 installment accounts reporting AT MINIMUM to build a strong credit profile.
📌 If you have credit cards with high balances, work to pay them down to 20% utilization. I recommend paying down the cards with the highest interest first.
📌 Avoid voluntarily closing your credit cards OR having the card issuer involuntarily close your account. This will drop your overall credit score!

Are you an authorized user on someone’s credit card? 👀 Take notes!!
👉🏾 If the card issuer reports authorized users to the credit bureaus, then any activity on the card you’re piggybacking off of can impact your credit - good, bad, indifferent.
Becoming an authorized user is a great temporary credit building tool, if you are piggybacking the right card with consistently positive activity.
‼️Once you’re attached to the card, high utilization, late payments or the closing of the card ALL report to your credit, too! Which doesn’t help your credit at all! 😩
If you’re thinking to become an AU on someone’s account, ask them these questions first:
1. How long has their card been open? (The older the credit card, the better)
2. Do they currently have 30% utilization or less on the card? Do they MAINTAIN low utilization normally?
3. Do they actively use the card? (You don’t want their card closed due to inactivity while you’re attached as an AU)

😨 Most people don’t know they have a Chexsystems report until they are denied access by a bank or credit union.
Having positive banking history keeps you out of Chexsystems! 😉
Chexsystems is a consumer reporting agency for banks & credit unions, just like credit bureaus provide consumer reporting for credit.
☝🏾However, the significant difference is that you’re only in Chexsystems if you’ve mishandled your checking or savings account in some way OR if misinformation is reported about you by the bank.
In other words: You don’t want to have a Chexsystems report. This is not a good thing.
Each bank has different reasons for reporting customers to Chexsystems, but the most common reasons are:
1️⃣ Bounced checks
2️⃣ Overdrafts
3️⃣ Unpaid bank fees
4️⃣ Excessively keeping a negative balance
5️⃣ A bank closed your account for misuse or unpaid fees
Please note that clerical errors happen often so you want to pull your Chexsystems report if you have one to review for any errors that can be disputed.

If you have a Chexsystems report with derogatory marks from a bank/credit union, those derogatory marks will stay on the report for 5 years, which can stop you from being able to open a new checking or savings account.

⚠️ Caution: Log in to your student loan servicer portals monthly to ensure a billing statement has not been generated with an upcoming, unexpected due date!
✅ Yes, the payment suspension was extended to August 2022, but you still need to monitor your portals.
We have encountered many student loan borrowers who were not regularly monitoring their student loan portals during this payment suspension period, thinking there’s nothing to monitor until the payment suspension ends…… 😓
Unfortunately, for some, payments came due during the suspension (ex: IDR plan ended and they needed to recertify or a host of other reasons) and they didn’t realize this until a LATE PAYMENT hit their report. 😕😓which drastically hurts your score.
‼️Please also keep in mind that student loan servicers only report late payments after 120 days of delinquency.
So imagine relaxing, living your best life not thinking about your federal student loans because Joe Biden extended the date again & BOOM 💥 LATE PAYMENT!
👉🏾 Login to studentaid.gov and/or your student loan service portals (ex: aidvantage, Navient) to make sure your next due date isn’t next month!
👉🏾 And if it is, call them to work out an arrangement, get on an income driven repayment plan, deferment or forbearance. Explore ALL options if you are unable to make payments at this time.

Keep your old card accounts OPEN! 💳
Closing or attempting to delete accounts with great credit age can negatively impact your credit scores. Here’s how:
🔹 Closing a credit card can raise your utilization ratio, which will lower your score. Yes, the credit age from the closed card will count towards your credit age, but your utilization will shift possibly beyond 30% or if that’s your only card, then you no longer have a revolving account that’s scoreable.
🔹Closed accounts don’t immediately fall off your reports but they do fall off sooner than open accounts, which impacts your overall credit age (15% of your score)
🔹Closing an account can hurt your credit mix. Lenders & creditors like to see well-rounder credit profiles. Meaning you have a mix of revolving and installment accounts. (Credit mix is 10% of your score)
Here are reasonable scenarios of when to consider closing an account:
1. The account has high recurring fees that are genuinely no longer affordable (such as a credit card with a high annual membership fee)
2. The account is a joint card with a former spouse or person that you no longer have ties with and the account is now a financial liability or burden for you.

If you are denied credit by a particular card issuer, I recommend waiting at least 6 months until you apply again. During that time, take note of the reasons for the denial outlined in the adverse action letter they mailed you, and work on getting those issues resolved.
