Do you send and receive money through CashApp, PayPal, Venmo, or Zelle?

As of January 1, 2022, the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 now requires these merchants to report transactions of $600 or more to the IRS regardless of the number of transactions.

Do you use these merchants to send and receive money to and from your family? Now is the time to protect yourself because the IRS will tax you on all that money.

Here are some tips to help you avoid these issues:

• Hire a professional and experienced bookkeeper. Accurate bookkeeping can help distinguish business transfers of money and transfers between you and your child and/or spouse.

• When possible, complete these transactions bank-to-bank (internal transfers) to avoid distorted cash flow.

• Take full advantage of the description option. Always note what the funds are for – i.e. Chores, gas, household expense, etc.

Taking advantage of these tips will help protect you if these transactions are accidentally reported to the IRS.
