It's Christmas break. The kids are home for two weeks, and this year, so is she.

And for once, her head is home too.

In other years, she sat down to Christmas dinner running numbers in the back of her mind. Did payroll clear? What's the tax bill going to be? How are we covering January?

This year, every one of those questions already has an answer. It started with one meeting in the fall.

I love seeing my clients in April. They walk out the door laughing, telling me how much they love getting their taxes done.

Why? Because we made a plan in the fall.

She brings coffee and the list of questions she's been saving since August. I bring her numbers. By the time she leaves, every question has an answer, and she has a punch list of what to tackle before she closes out the year, with a date next to each item.

That's the whole meeting. Her numbers, her questions, and a plan. And come April, there are rarely any surprises.

If you've got a list like that sitting in your phone, bring it. There are twelve weeks left, and that's still enough time.

You gave up most of your Saturdays this summer. Here's how to get some of them back next year.

How do I get my weekends back? That's the second question the Simply Balanced Method asks. It shows up in the Builder stage, when the business keeps growing and the weekends keep shrinking.

Working more hours won't fix it. When margins are thin, you take more jobs to make the same money, and more jobs eat more Saturdays. When the work is priced right, you can say no to the jobs that aren't worth it.

That's Time Margin. It comes from giving your hours only to work that's worth them.

That's one of four questions, and knowing which one is yours tells you exactly where your business stands. Find your stage in under four minutes β†’ https://www.simplybalancedaccountants.com/stage-assessment

If your March meeting never happened, I want to be clear about something: everything that matters is still open.

I know how October can feel. The year got away from you, and it's easy to think you missed your chance.

You didn't. The best time to put a plan in place was March. The second-best time is while twelve weeks are still left, the payroll company still takes changes, and the dealer can still deliver.

That's today.

October is my favorite month with clients. It's when we still have time to change how their year ends.

My year-end meetings were on the calendar months ago. I walk in with their numbers already read, and we go through what's still open before December 31: owner pay, including their own retirement through payroll. When bills get paid and invoices go out. Equipment in service by the 31st. Winter pay for the crew, and a plan to get to spring.

They leave knowing how the year ends, with time left to change it.

If nobody has that meeting on your calendar, that's not on you. Your preparer was hired to do last year. This year needs its own sit-down.

90 days is enough. Book a Year-End Walkthrough and leave with a punch list of what to tackle before you close the year out.

Your crews are booked through Thanksgiving.
But is all that work actually making the business money?

Am I actually making money? That's the first question the Simply Balanced Method asks β€” before growth, before hiring, before the truck.

Busy is not the same as profitable.
A full schedule is not the same as ahead.

Here's how to answer it. Pull your profit and loss through September. Find the profit line, after you've paid yourself. That number is what the business made.

If it's healthy, the work is paying you. If it's thin, the schedule is just keeping you busy. Either way, you still have time to do something about it this year.

That's one of four questions β€” and knowing which one is yours tells you exactly where your business stands. Find your stage in under four minutes β†’ https://www.simplybalancedaccountants.com/stage-assessment

When did you last look at the profit line β€” this month, or last April? Tell me below. πŸ‘‡

90 days is still enough time to change how the year ends.

Your taxes aren't a spring problem. The return gets filed in spring, but the number on it is still moving right now.

Here's what you can still change before December 31:
β†’ How you pay yourself, including your own retirement
β†’ When bills get paid and invoices go out
β†’ Whether the equipment you're eyeing lands this year or next
β†’ What winter looks like for your crew

Every one of those is still open, and every one of them moves your tax bill.

You don't have to wait for a fresh start in March. You can finish this year on purpose.

The government people do not, in fact, write it off. Nobody at the IRS is buying you a truck.

A write-off means you paid full price and get a little back later. The rest was your money, and it's gone.

Happy Friday. Go have a weekend.
