Here’s an interesting retirement question:
Would you rather retire with $1 million in an account or know you have $5,000 of reliable monthly income?
There isn’t enough information to choose a “right” answer, and that’s exactly the point.
We spend decades thinking about how much we need to accumulate for retirement. Eventually, though, that savings has to turn into groceries, housing, healthcare, travel, and everyday life.
That changes the conversation.
Instead of only asking, “How much do I need to retire?” it can be more useful to ask:
“What will my life actually cost each month, and where will that money come from?”
Your lifestyle, Social Security, pensions, retirement accounts, taxes, and other income sources can all become part of that picture.
Saving helps you reach retirement.
Knowing how those savings will support your life once you get there is a different conversation, and one worth having before your last day of work.
