🎉 FUN FACT: Norumbega Financial turns 25 today!

Twenty-five years. It’s hard to put into words how grateful I feel this morning.

When Norumbega Financial opened its doors on October 16, 2001, I couldn’t have imagined all the people, families, and stories that would come through them.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of sitting at kitchen tables and around my own table with so many of you. Celebrating new grandbabies and retirements. Talking through hard decisions and big dreams. Helping families care for one another across generations.

Markets have come and gone. Headlines have changed a thousand times. But the heart of this work has stayed the same: listening, caring, and helping your money serve the life you want to live.

To every client, friend, neighbor, and community partner who has trusted us over these 25 years: thank you. You are the reason this work means so much. 💚

Here’s to the next chapter, and to many more cups of coffee together. ☕🍂

Over 70½ and love to give? There’s a giving tool you may want to know about. 🍁

It’s called a Qualified Charitable Distribution, or QCD for short.

In plain English: if you’re over 70½, a QCD lets you send money directly from your IRA to a qualified charity. Because it goes straight to the charity, it isn’t counted as taxable income to you. And once you’ve reached the age for required minimum distributions, a QCD can count toward that requirement, too.

For many retirees, that means the gift they were already planning to give can do a little more good. 🌿

A few gentle reminders:

🍂 The money needs to go directly from your IRA to the charity
🍂 Timing matters, so it’s best not to wait until the last week of December
🍂 Your tax professional and financial advisor can help make sure it’s set up correctly

If you’ve been wondering whether a QCD might fit into your giving plans this year, I’d be glad to talk it through with you.

Have you ever noticed how good it feels to give? 💚

It turns out there’s a reason for that.

Researchers have found that generosity activates the brain’s reward centers, creating what’s sometimes called the “helper’s high.” That warm feeling after dropping off a donation or helping a neighbor isn’t just in your head… well, technically it is, but in the best way. 😊

One couple I work with sets aside money every fall for their church and a local food pantry. They told me, “We treat it like a harvest. It reminds us of how much we’ve been given.”

I love that so much.

Because giving isn’t only about what leaves our hands. It’s also about what it grows in us: gratitude, connection, and a deeper sense of what really matters.

As the leaves fall and the season turns toward Thanksgiving, I hope you find a little room for that kind of giving, too. 🍂

Who or what is close to your heart this season? I’d love to hear about the causes you care about.

I've seen the truth of this over and over again across many years of sitting with families around the table.

It isn't because calm investors know something the rest of us don't. It's because anxiety has a way of nudging us into decisions we later wish we could take back. Selling when the headlines are scary. Jumping in when everyone else is excited. Changing course right when patience was needed most.

Calm, on the other hand, gives us room to breathe. Room to remember why we made our plan in the first place.

And here's the comforting part: calm isn't a personality trait you're born with. It's something we can build. ☕

🍂 Know what you own and why you own it
🍂 Keep a cushion of cash so you're never forced to sell at a bad time
🍂 Check in on a schedule, not on every headline
🍂 Have someone in your corner you can call before making a big move

Like a Maine fall morning, the quiet moments are often where the clearest thinking happens.

💝 Generosity and wisdom make a beautiful pair.

This time of year, so many of us start thinking about the people and causes we want to support before the year wraps up. Our church. The local food pantry. The organizations that make our communities feel like home.

A few thoughtful choices can help your generosity reach even further.

In this week’s blog, “Tax-Smart Giving Strategies,” I’m sharing three ideas worth knowing about:

🍂 Giving appreciated investments instead of cash
🍂 “Bunching” several years of giving into one
🍂 Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) for those over 70½

But here’s my favorite part: strategy is only half the story. Giving simply feels good. One couple I work with treats their fall giving like a harvest, a reminder of how much they’ve been given.

Tax efficiency matters. Heart matters more. 💚

📸 Recent Selfie Rundown! 💚

If you follow along here, you know I never miss a chance to grab a quick selfie with the wonderful people in my life. 😊

Here’s a little peek at the past few weeks:

🍂 A cozy girls’ night full of laughter, sweatshirts, and way too many snacks
☕ Kitchen-table catch-ups with friends spanning generations
👟 An early-morning run (reflective vests and all!) with a friend who keeps me moving
🤝 Workshops, networking, and community events with neighbors and business friends
🌲 Coffee dates, patio lunches, and those “we have to do this more often” moments

What I love about these photos is that none of them are about money. They’re about connection, the people and moments that make life rich in the ways that matter most.

That’s really what this work is all about for me. Helping your money serve the life you want to live means more time for the people, places, and memories that fill your heart. 🌿

Thank you to everyone who smiled for my camera this season. You make Maine feel like home. 💚

Why do some habits stick so easily? 🍁

Nobody has to remind most Mainers to put the storm windows in or rake the leaves. The season does the reminding for us.

Behavioral finance has a name for this: temporal anchoring. When we tie a good habit to a natural seasonal cue, it becomes much easier to keep doing it, year after year.

So what if your financial check-up became part of your autumn rhythm, too?

Right alongside apple picking, stacking the woodpile, and pulling the flannel sheets out of the closet. 😊

It doesn’t need to be a big production. An hour, a warm drink, and a notebook can go a long way toward bringing a little order and calm into the months ahead.

Small steps add up fast. 🌿

🌿 FRIDAY PRO TIP: Peek at your retirement contributions before the year runs out.

This one takes about five minutes and a cup of coffee. ☕

If you contribute to a workplace retirement plan, log in and look at how much you’ve put in so far this year. Then ask yourself two simple questions:

🍂 Am I on track with what I planned to save this year?
🍂 Is there room to nudge my contribution up for the last few paychecks?

There are only a handful of paychecks left in 2026, so now is a wonderful time to check, while there’s still time to make an adjustment if you’d like to.

Your HR or benefits team can usually help you make a change quickly. And if you’re not sure what makes sense for your situation, that’s exactly the kind of question I love to talk through.

Small steps add up fast.

“My October review is like cleaning out the barn.” 🍂

A client said this to me once, and I’ve never forgotten it.

“I can’t see progress until I’ve done it,” she said, “and then everything feels calmer.”

Isn’t that so true?

So much of our financial stress comes from the things we haven’t looked at yet. The statement we haven’t opened. The benefits form we keep meaning to read. The question we’ve been carrying around for months.

Once we finally sit down and sort through it, things usually feel a whole lot lighter. Not because everything is perfect, but because we know where we stand.

Clarity is progress. 🌿

So here’s my gentle question for you this week: Is there a little corner of your financial “barn” that’s been waiting for some attention?

You don’t have to tackle it all at once. Just open the door.

And if you’d like some company while you sort through it, I’m always happy to help.
