3 Tax Deductions Landscapers Commonly Miss π±
Running a landscaping business means a lot of moving pieces β and a lot of deductions that slip through the cracks if your books aren't dialed in. Here are three we see missed all the time:
1. Mileage π
Every mile you drive for business is deductible β job sites, supply runs, client meetings, even trips to drop off equipment for repair. Most owners either don't track it at all or only remember the obvious trips. Whether you use the standard mileage rate or actual expenses, this adds up fast over a year of driving a work truck.
2. Equipment & Repairs π§
Mowers, trimmers, blades, edgers β the cost of the equipment itself is deductible, but so is the maintenance and repair work that keeps it running. Oil changes, blade sharpening, replacement parts, even a busted mower deck after a rough season. If it keeps your equipment operational, it's likely deductible.
3. Materials πΎ
Mulch, soil, seed, fertilizer, plants β anything you purchase and use on a client's property is a deductible business expense, not just a job cost you eat. This one gets missed often because owners lump material costs into "what the job cost me" without tracking it separately for tax purposes.
The catch: none of these help you if they're not tracked and categorized correctly throughout the year. That's where clean bookkeeping pays for itself β literally.
Know your numbers. Keep more of what you earn. π±
