Almost everyone wants to pay less tax. The question worth asking is: less tax this year, or less tax over your lifetime?

Those aren’t always the same answer. Cutting this year’s bill can mean a larger one down the road, along with a higher average rate over time.

Retirement plan contributions, Roth conversions, donor-advised funds, and beneficiary designations all look different through that longer lens. Some of them involve paying more now to pay less later.

Watch our video to find out more.

Wealth advisors Daniel Andersen, CFP®, and Trevor Stone, CFP®, EA, explain why smoothing your tax rate over a lifetime may be a smarter strategy than focusing on a single year.

Is a Roth conversion a good idea? It's a question we hear often, and the answer depends on the year more than the person.

A conversion moves money from a traditional 401(k) or IRA into a Roth, where qualified withdrawals come out untaxed later. You pay income tax on the amount you convert, in the year you convert it.

That cost is much easier to absorb in a year when your taxable income is already low.

Roth or traditional? It's one of the most common retirement savings questions we hear.

A traditional IRA or 401(k) gives you a tax deduction now, and the money is taxed as ordinary income when you withdraw it. A Roth flips that, so you contribute after-tax dollars and qualified withdrawals come out untaxed.

Which one works in your favor comes down to how your bracket today compares to the bracket you expect in retirement. If they're close, the math is about the same either way. If there's a gap, that's where the opportunity lives.

A projected bracket is an estimate, so it's worth talking through with an advisor. Watch our video to find out more.

Extra cash each month, and a decision to make: Pay down debt, or invest it?

The starting point is your emergency fund. After that, the general rule of thumb is to send extra dollars wherever they can do the most good, usually toward the debt with the highest interest rate or into your portfolio if the potential return is higher than what you'd save on that debt.

High-interest debt, like a credit card, is usually an easy call. Lower-rate debt against long-term investing is a closer one, and there's no single right answer. Watch our video to find out more.

Ever build a detailed budget only to reach the end of the month with less left over than you planned? It happens to almost everyone. Usually, nothing dramatic caused it, just a handful of small, unplanned purchases that added up along the way.

Our new video and recap look at why that gap shows up, and offer a different approach to budgeting. Instead of starting with expenses, you can start with what you're saving for, whether that's a trip, a car, or retirement, and work backward to figure out the monthly amount that gets you there.

If you're retiring before 65 in California, which accounts you draw income from can directly affect what your health coverage costs each month.

Covered California ties financial help to your household income. For 2026, a two-person household with income up to $84,600 may qualify for a premium tax credit. Cross that line, and the credit disappears entirely, with no cushion.

The key: Not all income counts the same way. Roth IRA withdrawals don't move the needle on your modified adjusted gross income. Traditional IRA withdrawals count in full. Even the non-taxed portion of Social Security factors in.

The same spending need can produce very different results depending on where the money comes from.

How the source of your retirement income can affect Covered California subsidy eligibility, and what retirees planning to leave work before 65 should know for 2026.

Higher prices have been part of everyday life for several years now, and recently, inflation moved higher again. The Federal Reserve held rates steady at its June meeting but signaled that the direction of travel may be shifting.

From savings rates and bond values to retirement income and variable-rate debt, the current environment touches multiple areas of financial life at once.

Understanding what the Fed does and why it matters can help you feel more grounded when you hear the headlines and make more informed decisions about your finances.

When the Fed raises rates to fight inflation, your everyday finances feel it. Here’s what that relationship means for your wallet, your savings, and your long-term plans.

The financial chaos that can follow a loss isn't always inevitable. It's often the result of planning that never happened.

A clear inventory of accounts, updated beneficiary designations, an executor who knows what the role involves, and a conversation with your family about what's in place. These things take time now but can spare the people you love an enormous amount of stress later.

Without an updated estate plan, your children may face financial and legal complexity on top of grief. Here’s what’s at stake and how getting organized can help the people you love.

Many adult children want to talk to their parents about long-term care. But they also keep finding reasons to put it off.

The topic carries emotional weight, including the parents' fears of losing independence and the awkwardness of asking them to think about their own vulnerability. But families who have this conversation before a health crisis forces it tend to handle whatever comes next with far less conflict.

The key? Start with curiosity, not a plan. Ask your parents what they want before arriving with a list of concerns. People are often more open to hard conversations when they feel like the driver, not the passenger.

Helping aging parents with their finances is an act of love. But it can go sideways. Here are five mistakes adult children commonly make, with tips for avoiding them.

You've spent decades building a financial life. But the paperwork documenting it is somewhere, or everywhere.

The question is whether your children can find it if they need to. "Figuring it out" in the middle of a health crisis or after a loss can mean weeks of phone calls, delayed decisions, and stress nobody needs on top of grief.

The families who handle those moments most gracefully aren't necessarily the ones with the most wealth. They're often the ones where someone took the time to get organized.

If something happened to you tomorrow, would your children know where to find what they need? Here's what to organize and why it matters.
