Private equity is buying up local trades and bookkeeping firms across Texas. Same playbook every time: buy a platform company, then quietly acquire the local competitors as "bolt-ons." The name on the door stays. The ownership doesn't.

EIN or SSN? Here's the simple rule.

Single-member LLC or sole proprietor with no employees — the IRS lets you use your SSN for tax purposes.

The moment you hire anyone, form a partnership or corporation, or want to keep your SSN off business paperwork — that's when you need an EIN.

Getting one is free and takes about ten minutes directly on IRS.gov.

📌 Form 941 (Q3 federal payroll) — due Nov 2
📌 Texas sales tax, quarterly filers — due Oct 20
📌 New Mexico gross receipts tax, quarterly filers — due Oct 25

Three different forms, three different deadlines, all inside about two weeks of each other. Missing one means penalties and interest on top of what you already owe.

Payroll mistakes that trigger real penalties.

The common ones: misclassifying employees as contractors, missing federal deposit deadlines, miscalculating overtime, late quarterly 941 filings.

IRS penalties for late payroll tax deposits start at 2% and can reach 15% of the unpaid amount, depending on how late.

Payroll isn't figure-it-out-as-you-go. Small mistakes compound into real dollar penalties fast.

You've got three-quarters of the year on the books — enough to see where you'll land, and still enough time to do something about it. Come January, the year is locked.

Right now there's still time to adjust withholding, time a purchase, fund a retirement account, or catch a deduction before Dec 31.
